As of the end of September 2024, existing Hotmail accounts no longer connect on iOS iPhone, iPad and Mac. Microsoft updated the security behind it, so the existing apps and connections some of us have been using unchanged since the 1990s no longer connect.
It's easy to fix. All we do is create a new Outlook account with the same information and we're good to go.
In iOS 18 (older versions have the same settings, just possibly elsewhere), simply go to:
Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts > Add Account > select Outlook.com > sign in with your usual Hotmail address and password > be sure Mail is selected ON, and personally I set the others off > Save
Use this newly created Outlook account option to see your Hotmail, and you're done.
When you're happy that all your mail is there and all is working well in the new Outlook account, feel free to delete the old duplicate but no longer connected Hotmail account at:
Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts >Hotmail > Delete Account.
Feel free to rename the new Outlook account as Hotmail if you like.
On Mac, we do the same thing. Simply add a new account in Mail (typically at Mail > Preferences > Accounts), select Outlook as the type, and you ought to be good to go.
The only gotcha on older versions of iOS and Mac OS is that you need to have the Outlook option when you create these new accounts. If you have an older OS or version of iOS and only have an option for Exchange, it won't work.
