Here's 40 FPS
Here's a sequence of some frames shot at 40 FPS with my R6 III. (Why frame rate matters for action.)
The image I showed yesterday is my favorite one in the middle below. Only one-tenth of a second elapsed from the first frame to the last, and they are all different. The times-of-day include thousandths of a second. Look at the ears and the paws fly around and the curl of the tail:

Click any to enlarge these 1,600 × 3,200 pixel vertical crops from the original 6,960 × 4,640 pixel horizontal images. Here is a different crop of my favorite image from its camera-original 32 MP © 5.6 MB file.
Even at 40 FPS, they're all different. It's great to be able to pick exactly the frame I want. This is easy, I used my 2014-era EF 100-400mm f/4.5~5.6L IS USM II on an EF to RF adapter and shot to a regular SD card.
I owe you an update on modern FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt (that article is from 2012). Cameras and lenses today are so awesome that you don't need to pay extra for fancier models. While camera makers, and especially retail camera stores will try to use FUD to make you think your older camera or lens or memory card somehow can't hack it, ever since October 20th, 2019 when everything changed, it's a new world in photography and even basic gear today can do just about anything.
If money matters I can't see any reason for an EOS R1 or R3 for speed, or an R5 II for more pixels. Rolling-shutter distortion is obviously no problem above, and even with "only" 32 MP I have no problem hard-cropping inside each frame and keeping every hair super sharp.
New: I tried some Watson LP-E6P batteries in my EOS R6 II, and they seem to work great.
New: I also got a tiny Watson Dual USB-C Canon LP-E6x Battery Charger, and it seems to work great.
It runs from USB-C (think wall charger, a socket in your car, an output from your MacBook, a solar panel, power bank, etc.), has two slots that charge at the same time and it's tiny. While I prefer the dual-color blinking light visible from across the room on Canon's own charger while at home, this tiny Watson charger is great if you need one for travel.
Another Flying Dog from Saturday!

Dogs Can Fly!!! Zeus, The Australian Cattle Dog, Flies at the Santee Fido Fest, 11:50 AM, Saturday, 28 February 2026. Cropped from horizontal Canon EOS R6 III shot, Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5~5.6L IS USM II on EF to RF adapter at 312mm at f/6.3 at 1/1,000 at Auto ISO 200 (LV 14.4), Radiant Photo software to add some light to Zeus' dark fur and and Skylum Luminar Neo software to add some deliberate vignetting to make Zeus stand out from the background. bigger.

Flying Dog Photos Conquered!!!
I've been trying to catch pups in flight since 2019.
My dogs are crummy models, so I don't get that many chances. Even the old R5 was great at this, catching the closest dog eye by magic as they run around, but I never had anyone have their dogs jump through hoops to get them airborne.
This weekend I set my camera ahead of time, went to a dog festival that mentioned dog agility (that's where they do aerobatics and all sorts of crazy things), and my new R6 III and classic EF 100-400mm f/4.5~5.6L IS USM II on EF to RF adapter nailed it! I got slews of great photos!
It's not 2018 anymore. We no longer need dedicated sports cameras like the old R3 and R1.
With this R6 III and the older R6 II, each easily tracks flying dogs at 40 FPS even with my superb 10-year-old lens on an adapter.
This R6 III has more pixels than any of those others from which we can crop a little more tightly if needed.

Dogs Can Fly!!! Lil, The All-American Dog, Airborne at the Santee Fido Fest, 12:12 PM, Saturday, 28 February 2026. Cropped from horizontal Canon EOS R6 III shot, Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5~5.6L IS USM II on EF to RF adapter at 200mm wide-open at f/5 at 1/2,000 at Auto ISO 200 (LV 15.0), Radiant Photo software to add some contrast and and Skylum Luminar Neo software to add some deliberate vignetting to make this outstanding pup stand out. bigger or camera-original 32 MP © 5.6 MB file.
The R6 III easily locks-on and tracks the closest dog eye all by itself. I don't even have to assign an AF area; it just finds the dog. It makes these shots trivially easy today, once you get the camera set properly, which you can see at my C3 (Flying Dog) settings here. It's also as easy as downloading my R6 III settings file that I share in my R6 III User's Guide.

It takes all kinds. Personally I prefer camera brand lenses with autofocus which are much smaller and lighter amd just as sharp, but some guys just like nice things.

The first of a new generation of real LEICAs: the first real LEICA that lets us see what actually will be in our picture through the finder before we take it.
While every other camera on the planet allows this (as well as lesser semi-LEICAs like the SL and S and other systems too bulky to share the soul of a real LEICA), every other real LEICA und LEICA M has used the same idiotic separate viewfinder that uses the same reverse Galilean design as disposable cameras. These optical finders off in the corner of the camera only see from a point of view a few inches away from the lens, not through the lens, and thus never give an accurate view of the relative positions of near and far objects. This is why SLRs rendered LEICAs obsolete as of the 1960s; SLRs let us see what actually was going to be in our picture in ways that rangefinder cameras never could.
The M EV 1 is more significant than the creation of the LEICA M3 in 1953, which was just a ruse to let LEICA sell more lenses because the M3 was the first LEICA to allow different frame lines in the in-camera finder. Real photographers of the era knew the real LEICAs (screw mount) were more than sufficient for real photographic art. With the
For the first time in human history, a real LEICA lets us see our true composition. I'm looking forward to getting mine for review.

An astronomical version of the OM-3.
Crazy days! This is an underwater point-and-shoot sold with a microscope adapter for medical, forensic & scientific endeavours.
This series offers olde-fashioned optical performance, and these optical imperfections are consistent across all the focal lengths.
Why do real cinematographers pay more than most people pay for a used car for each lens in this series, just to get deliberately imperfect optics? Simple: because they are predictable and controlled across all the focal lengths. When I asked ASC members previously about why they'd pay $25,000 for a flawless lens and then put Vaseline on a filter in front of it, it was for the fact that they knew with perfect lenses that the effect of this filter would be exactly what that filter did, and the lens would have no contribution to the effect. With these lenses, you're buying into just one look, and knowing that that look will be consistent at every focal length.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II USM.
A reader asked, and I didn't have much data in my original review from 2012 when this lens came out. Turns out that yes, this EF lens has much less spherochromatism than the RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM does.
How about that?
OK, not totally new, but still so new that I can't recall ever seeing it in Nikon or Sony. Those more primitive brands still can't composite final images in-camera and expect us to do it in a computer — like we had to do with panoramic stitching 20 years ago.
I was out shooting on Route 66 this weekend and was astounded at how well it works and easy it is to shoot this all hand-held — even outside at night in the dark! For the first time since I put away my 4 × 5" camera I can get everything in perfect focus!
I simply point-and-shoot, the camera makes a fast set of focus-bracketed exposures and magically composites them in-camera to create an image with everything in perfect focus!
Not only can I shot hand-held in the dark with long stabilized exposures of typically ⅛ of a second, I can shoot at large apertures so I can shoot at low, clean ISOs and then the compositing still gets everything in focus - even better and sharper than if I had a tripod and shot at f/22!
This opens up a new realm in photography. Even iPhone can't do this yet.

Viltrox 16mm f/1.8.

Canon EOS R6 Mk III with RF 45mm f/1.2 STM.
Heh heh, if I do say so myself I've spend a lot of time on this newest guide and it's the biggest, clearest, best organized and most comprehensive guide I've ever written.
Even if you don't have an R6 Mk III, much of this guide applies to most Canon mirrorless cameras, just that the menu locations move around between models, assuming your camera has any particular feature.

EOS R6 III!!!
Here are some snaps from my R6 III. As expected, I'm loving it. It's been a long time since I've been to the zoo; today its so easy to get a zillion great shots!

Red and Green Number Five in a Parking Structure at Ryan's college, 3:10 PM, Tuesday, 13 January 2026. Canon EOS R6 III in square-crop mode, Canon RF 45mm f/1.2 STM at f/5.6 handheld at 1/10 at Auto ISO 200 (LV 7.4), Radiant Photo software to add light. bigger or full-resolution 4,640 × 4,640 pixel © 8 MB image.

Ryan giving us the walking tour of the routes to and from his classes for next semester at college, 3:40 PM, Tuesday, 13 January 2026. Canon EOS R6 III, Canon RF 45mm f/1.2 STM at f/5.6 at 1/160 at Auto ISO 100, +0.7 stops exposure compensation (LV 12.4), cropped to about a square and otherwise exactly as shot. bigger.

Ryan in the Porsche coming home from school, 5:16 PM, Tuesday, 13 January 2026. Canon EOS R6 III, Canon RF 45mm f/1.2 STM at f/1.2 handheld at 1/15 at Auto ISO 100, +0.7 stops exposure compensation (LV 4.6), Radiant Photo software to add light. bigger or full-resolution 33 MP © 3.3 MB JPG.
Bokeh!!!!! I'm also loving my nearly-free Canon RF 45mm f/1.2 STM. It's too sharp off on the sides, and my R6 III easily focussed way out there on the right. Not bad for $469; back in previous decades this level of f/1.2 aspherical performance cost thousands and thousands of dollars.

Canon EL-1 Version 2.
It's exactly the same as the original EL-1 of 2020, except that the v2 is now made in Japan rather than having been dumped to Burma (Myanmar) as was the original.
What's funny is how the slop websites just AI'd their reviews, which pulled all the data from the press releases for the old and new versions. Turns out the press data for the v2 copied and pasted a lot from the original 2020 release, so slop sites claim this v2 has things like a "new user interface" and "new controller" and a "new cooling fan." Nope; the original EL-1 has all the same things; these are not "new" in the v2: they carry over from the original — much as the text in the press releases!!!
Hah!
I've got lots more reviews and how-tos coming each day, the Days of Christmas continue! I was really socked-in over the holidays and just haven't been able to share all the reviews I'd written just yet.

Canon RF 75-300mm f/4-5.6.
While unstabilized and uses 1990s autofocus technology, it's also super-inexpensive, lightweight and a stop faster than the RF 100-400mm IS USM.
This 75-300mm is so basic that the only letters it has in its name are "RF" — no IS, no USM, Noel (No L, ha ha), no STM, no nothing other than basic optics with a toylike AF motor in the newest mount.
To my pleasant surprise, used on a stabilized a camera actually works really well — and I'm more likely to take it with me because it's so small!
The Days of Christmas continue; I have major updates and new reviews coming each day.
I'm also working on the Sony A7 V, FE 16mm f/1.8 G and FE 24-50mm f2.8 G in for review this week — watch this space!
My R6 III, RF 45mm f/1.2 and RF 85mm f/1.4L VCM are on deck for when I dig through the Sonys.
20 December 2025, Saturday

Canon RF 20mm f/1.4L VCM.
My next of many new reviews for the 12 Days of Christmas coming for the next week or so.
I created a load of major reviews over the past few months, but it's been tough getting them all completed. Now I have a bunch ready to go, so each day, more of the real stuff you guys love.
Not only am I the last major 1990s photo website that's still popular and run by its creator, it's still just me working away by myself. All the crappy content is directly from me — no AI or vampiri involved.
In case you're curious, I just got my A7 V and R6 III. Look for hands-on updates to my A7 V review over the next week or two, and to my R6 III review after that.
Keep looking here each day; I have complete new reviews coming each day!!!
19 December 2025, Friday

Canon EOS R1 and EF 50mm f/1.0L USM on an EF to RF adapter.

Here's why HASSELBLAD won't let us use iPhones to enter their contest:

Miniature Horse, California, 10:54 A.M., Tuesday, 16 December 2025. iPhone 17 Pro Max 1× (6.8mm actual or 24mm eq.) camera at f/1.8 at 1/3,279 at Auto ISO 80 (LV 13⅔), Radiant Photo software. bigger or full resolution.
This is trivial to shoot with iPhone, but a royal contortion with a conventional camera.
I saw this miniature horse munching the grass when I went out to pick up my dogs from the groomers right after writing about HASSELBLAD's free photo contest giving away a free HASSELBLAD, so long as you don't shoot your entry with an iPhone.
I held my iPhone upside-down on the ground, saw my composition on its huge and brilliant OLED screen, and tapped the Camera Control button to shoot — all with a spare hand running in to get my dogs. I got my shot without having to think about anything other than my image. I doubt my larger cameras could have tracked focus this quickly, they certainly couldn't focus this close, and certainly wouldn't let me see my composition in direct sunlight from arm's length away!
The inter-juxtaposition of the girl and the horse was only realized by moving my iPhone around quickly as the horse moved around. Good luck trying to move a big camera with a tiny dim screen in real time to see what you're doing and get this, much less God only knows how I would be able to hit the shutter button of a "real" camera with the same hand as I'm holding the camera — upside down!
Much as Porsche owners understand how First-World problems, like getting the right color for deviated stitching, are still problems, photos made with iPhones are still photos.
New: Ricoh GR IV HDF, also at B&H.
22 MP APS-C P&S, fixed18mm (28mm eq.) f/2.8 lens.
$200 off: Canon R100 & RF-s 18-45mm IS ST: $479.99.
16 December 2025, Tuesday
It looks easy to submit images and I see no entry fee.
The only gotchas are that this is for kids 21 and younger, and that HASSELBLAD will let you submit from any camera you want, film or digital, so long as it's not a phone or drone. That's prejudiced as far as I'm concerned, but hey, it's their contest and they're giving away a free camera, so they can make whatever rules they want. Photography is only about seeing, it's not about your camera — but a camera maker certainly isn't going to let on to that.
Have your kids enter, I don't see any reason not to. Loan them your Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, LEICA or whatever and let them have at it. The worst that could happen is that they might be off shooting with a free brand-new HASSELBLAD X2D 100C system someplace exotic this spring.

04 December 2025, Thursday

Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II.
Same iffy optics as the 2015 version, now with a linear voice-coil focus motor.
Has a new built-in hood and Doppelnockensystem (double cam system) to compensate the optics to focus as closely as 0.4m (1.3') — very useful on the newest M EV1 where you can see the focus that close. It also has an 11 blade diaphragm, up from 9.
This «SAFARI» version is new and you have to order it. Schwarz (black) und silber (silver) are already available today, all with identical speciations and performance, varying only in color.
The reason we invest in LEICA is that excellence never goes out of style. Our lenses only go up in value. The LEICA SUMMICRON-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH mit floating-elements I bought back in 2010 when it came out has identical optics to these: no reason to have to replace what I already bought 15 years ago. I think I paid about $4,000 for mine, and now they go for $6,500 — all with the same optics.
Unlike the digital disposable plastic lenses like the Sony above, my all-metal mechanical LEICA lenses will last für generations.
These Glänzend Schwarz (glossy black) und «SAFARI» versions are new colors of 2023's existing Schwarz (black) und Silber (silver) versions 8 already available today.
These 2023 versions should have superior optics to every LEICA 50mm SUMMILUX made before 2023.
Real lenses for a change!

Canon EOS R5 (one CFexpress and one SD card slot, 25.5 oz./723g with battery and one SD card, $2,599) and EF 50mm f/1.0 L USM on EF to RF Control-Ring Adapter.
The original EOS R5 from 2020 is still among the very best cameras ever made. If you need more than 24 MP, this is the way to go.
I just noticed that it's now selling for $1,300 less than when it came out, and with the latest free firmware, it's much better today than it was back in 2020.
If you're wondering if original EOS R5 is a a good buy today, YES! It's an absolutely state-of-the-art camera at a bargain price. There isn't much significantly new or better in the much more expensive EOS R5 Mark II.
The R5 easily runs at 20 FPS and tracks autofocus and auto exposure just great.
I got my R5 at B&H. I'd also get it at at Adorama, at Amazon or at Crutchfield, or get it used if you know How to Win at eBay, or get it used at KEH:
Body-only: $2,599 at B&H, at Adorama, at Crutchfield and at Amazon, or $2,042 ~ 2,089 used at KEH, or about $1,907 used if you know How to Win at eBay.
R5 & RF 24-105mm f/4L kit: $3,849 at B&H, at Adorama, at Amazon, at B&H and at Crutchfield.
You're welcome, and if you want the newest R5 II for nuttiness like in-camera hand-held focus stacking and compositing (the original R5 easily shoots with focus bracketing, but can't stack and composite them in-camera as the R5 II can), it's also selling today for $300 off its introductory price last year.
30-Day Low Price Guarantee at B&H
I've been buying from B&H for almost 50 years, ever since the mid-to-late 1970s when I was in junior high school.
Among my reasons have always been their 100% cash-back returns policy that lets me try everything in my own environment and not be stuck if I don't love it. I've never had to waste time reading other people's reviews and wondering; if I don't love how it works for me, no worries.
I just learned as I was ordering my Mac Mini on Black Friday sale yesterday that if the price drops any lower in the next 30 days, B&H will credit me back the difference if I ask.
How cool is that? I was wondering of I should have waited to see if it dropped any lower, and learned that I can just order and not worry; if I catch it, B&H will credit me for the lower price.
Be careful, while Adorama and Crutchfield probably offer the same deal (Crutchfield probably for 60 days, I'll check), last I asked, Amazon most emphatically offers no such policy since Amazon tweaks its prices continuously.
We never have to wait to order hoping the price will drop, and maybe missing a lower price. Order it now and love it, and if the price drops, just contact B&H and they'll credit us. Cool!
Postcript: after ordering my Mac Mini yesterday, the price today is $50 more. Maybe it will drop more on Friday; who knows, but if it doesn't, I still got the lowest price 😁. Love those guys!
Every day for the next week or so B&H's will be having new Deal Zone deals. Keep checking back here as I'll be getting lists of these and sharing the interesting deals — but you have to catch them each day before they expire at midnight NYC time (9 PM west coast USA).

Works great on mirrorless with EF to RF adapter, although the RF 50mm f/1.2 is even sharper at f/1.2. See these compared here. Even if the RF 50mm f/1.2 might be sharper in the lab at f/1.2. the EF 50mm f/1.2 and adapter combined are still smaller and lighter.

Help me help you
I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.
If you find this
as helpful as a book you might have had to buy or a workshop you may
have had to take, feel free to help me continue helping everyone.
If you've gotten your gear through one of my links or helped otherwise, you're family. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks!
If you haven't helped yet, please do, and consider helping me with a gift of $5.00.
The biggest help is when you use any of these links when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. eBay is always a gamble, but all the other places always have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.
Thanks for reading!
Ken
