SPRING Tour Next Month!!! Tuesday ~ Friday, 06-09 May 2025: Springtime Along California's Central Coast.

Irish Hills, San Luis Obispo, California

The Irish Hills at Dawn.

This tour is all about dawns over the verdant Irish Hills, spring flowers, tree tunnels, mountains of gold at Montaña de Oro State Park, the insane Madonna Inn, fine casual dining with the group in and around San Luis Obispo, the seaside town of Cayucos, BBQ at the world-famous SLO Farmers' Market, sea otters, sunsets at Pismo Beach and the Oceano Dunes, elephant seals at Ragged Point and everything else we explore.

It's an amazing area in springtime and it's hard not to be surrounded by beauty everywhere we go. Like all of our tours, we optimize the itineraries each day based on weather, climate, experience and intuition.

These are guided photo tours where we shoot all day, every day. If you want hands-on technical help, my colleague Dave Wyman and I are available for all the one-on-one instruction and face-to-face coaching, consultation and critique you'd like. Believe me, there's more than enough time out in the field to answer all your questions without having to waste time sitting around in a hotel with computers. This is all about shooting and quick iPhone edits; it's not a Photoshop class (but ask me all you want about that, too).

To register and for any questions, call or email Dave Wyman at (323) 377-7565 in Los Angeles. Dave Wyman is often out leading other tours, so he's not always sitting by his phone or computer. Dave organizes these tours while we both lead and teach. Dave Wyman is the author of many books about travel and photography; Fearless Photographer: Nature is his most recent, with Yosemite in Photographs, Backroads of Northern California and Backroads of Southern California so popular they're often sold out. Dave has been leading outdoor hiking, educational, camping, historical and photo trips for decades and decades and decades.

Shoot anything from iPhone to digital to 35mm & medium format, but we tend to move along fast enough that you'll want to leave the large format and wet collodion shooting for when you're on your own.

See you there!

Old Problem with New Cameras

A reader asks what to do, since nothing he has can read the raw files from his new Z6 III. This is a prime reason I never bother with raw; almost by definition since I always use the newest gear, none of my software can read the files — but that’s not helping you today. It will always be a problem in the future if you’re using the latest cameras.

I would suggest what Adobe told me, which is to load or update the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), which they keep updated with their newest decoders for all the cameras. In other words, ACR is Adobe’s most current solution, and even if you’re running old Photoshop as I am; ACR ought to open everything and be the newest from Adobe.

ACR is free, but you gotta have Photoshop for it to run. Everyone needs Photoshop, if you don’t have it, I get it at B&H for $20 a month — but no guarantees it will read those files!

Another suggestion is see if your camera offers a DNG format in which to shoot. DNG is a more (but not entirely) universal raw format.

Nikon’s own software should be able to read the files and convert them into something you need. Nikon’s software is usually poor, but it ought to be able to read the files. Today you probably download the software from the web; last time I wasted time with raw the software came on CD-ROM in the camera box. Same with Sony; the newest cameras raw files always read in Sony software even if in nothing else for the newest cameras.

Have you tried Apple’s Image Capture and/or Preview programs? Historically they’ve been very adept at opening a wide range of files and then allowing you to save them as something you can read.

Of course moving forwards any of these ideas are silly because you can set the camera to do these conversions for you by shooting in any format other than raw. Most people don’t realize that all cameras start off with the same raw data, and when you select TIFF or JPG or whatever, they do all the raw file processing extremely well in-camera and then save these as compatible files — saving you having to mess with software just to convert them to something you can read.

Pro productivity tip: shoot JPG and you're done.

Fujifilm X100F: Still the Best of the X100 Series

Fuji X100F

Fujifilm X100F.

I just updated my X100F review with the truth: I can't fathom how some people get lost in the crowd paying way over retail for the dumped-to-China X100VI when the X100F is a much better camera, and much easier and less expensive to get. The "Touch Functions" of the newer versions that replaced the real 4-way rear controller are garbage. (All of the newest three models also have a rear nubbin; the X100F adds a programmable 4-way controller to the nubbin for much more fluent control.)

At introduction when I saw that the X100VI was dumped to China I gave it a pass, hoping that it would let Fuji pump out enough to meet demand and dump the price, but no, the X100VI is still selling for record highs — if you can get one. I'll keep my X100F, thank you.

20 March 2025, Thursday

NEW: Fuji GFX100RF, also comes in Silver.

Also at Adorama, and also in silver at Adorama. Should ship April 24th.

This is a fixed-lens (35mm f/4; 28mm eq.), 102 MP, 33 × 44mm sensor point-and-shoot. It's like an an overgrown X100 VI, but with only an electronic (not optical) viewfinder, no stabilization and no flash, but it does have two SD/SDHC/SDXC slots.

The GFX100RF only has computational stabilization for video, but no sensor-shift stabilization and nothing for stills. The X100 VI has sensor-shift stabilization, lacking in the GFX100RF.

God bless Fuji for making something completely nuts like this. Everyone at Sony thought Morita had lost it when back in the 1970s he introduced a new kind of tape recorder that couldn’t record. Idiotic! Failure! What was it? It was what we now know as the Walkman.

$105 off (scratch & dent w/full new warranty): Nikon D7500: $592.

$97 off (scratch & dent w/full new warranty): Canon PZ-E2 Power Zoom Adapter for RF 24-105mm f/2.8L: $902.

Nikon EM

Nikon EM and 50mm f/1.8 SERIES E.

NEW: Nikon EM Review.

Make me stop! A reader asked about the old and crummy Nikon FG, and I realized I had started a page on the old (1979-1983) Nikon EM back in 2008, but never completed it as it was such an awful camera. The FG is a fancier model of the EM, the camera that was the start of the end of Nikon's leadership in 35mm cameras.

Well, I completed it today. The reason not to get an EM is that 1.) It's a very basic, simple, bottom-dollar 35mm SLR, and 2.) if you want a 35mm SLR, you can get a really good pro Nikon 35mm SLR for about the same price.

I figured it's my civic duty to call this out, as the latest generation of 35mm shooters has no idea what were the good and bad cameras from 45 years ago.

I also spiffed-up the 35mm section of my Nikon index page.

Updated: All Canon Mirrorless Ultrawide Lenses Compared.

You guys always catch me when there are any sort of minute typographical or technical errors or omissions.

Last week I published my Comparison of All Canon Mirrorless Ultrawide Lenses. I was overwhelmed with how many Canon had, far more than any other mirrorless brand so I had to write this so I could sort them all out for you and me. Canon had SIX mirrorless ultrawides!

Well, I forgot about the world's widest pro zoom, the spectacular RF 10-20mm f/4L IS STM, and none of you caught it 😁! I just added it to my comparison. This now makes SEVEN mirrorless ultrawides from Canon, of which there are SIX spectacular full-frame lenses, all of which are stabilized except the 16mm f/2.8 STM. Nibble on that, Sony, Nikon and Fuji!

Bravissimo!

Canon New F-1

Canon New F-1, FD 50mm f/1.2L and AE Power Winder FN.

OLD: Canon New F-1 Review.

Busted! This was an old page from 2009 which I never completed because it was such a bad camera for actual shooting. You have to buy and swap different meter heads and focus screens for different meter modes, and have to buy and attach the AE Power Winder FN otherwise the shutter-priority exposure mode is locked out!

The New F-1 was such an ergonomic train wreck that Canon correctly gambled that they could trash the entire FD system and create a brand-new EOS system with its own EF mount, and that pros would finally flock to Canon (which they did), which has more than made up for the few FD users who went apoplectic when Canon rendered the entire FD system obsolete in 1987.

17 March 2025, Saint Patrick's Day

Coming: Wednesday~ Saturday, 22-25 October 2025: FALL COLOR in The Eastern Sierra

We're still planing this, but since we have what should be the dates availableand in light of Saint Patrick's Day I just had to share this COLOR from last's year's fall tour:

Rainbow Over Grant Lake, California

Rainbow Over Grant Lake, California, 3:42 P.M., Wednesday, 16 October 2024. Canon R5 II, Nikon 77mm Circular Polarizer II hand-held in front of my RF 24-240mm IS USM at 44mm at f/7.1 at 1/125 at Auto ISO 100 (LV 12.6), Skylum Luminar Neo software. More tech details. bigger or fit-to-screen.

We sold out last year; here are the photos I made. We're still getting the 2025 registration page updated; here's last year's page with the old dates. This year's trip will be similar; we perfect the itinerary based on weather and color conditions.

Fuji X-T30 Update

Fuji 50mm f/1 on X-T30

Fujinon XF 50mm f/1 R WR on my X-T30.

I just fired up my beloved X-T30 from magical 2019 after a year or so of disuse to try my new TTartisan AF 56mm f/1.8, and was surprised to see three unusual things:

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Holds its value; a true classic. For the past two years 2023 ~ 2025 it's consistently sold for about $750 used without dropping in price if you know How to Win at eBay.

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com In 2025 at only 6 years old the hard but semi-rubbery ring around the eyepiece and its focus dial and VIEW MODE button has degraded and become sticky.

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com If left unused for a year or so and the battery gets to run down and all the menus reset, which are an absolute bear to have to relearn and reset again from scratch.

It's still my favorite Fuji interchangeable lens camera for its compact size and full feature set, which must be the reason it hasn't dropped at all in value second-hand for the past two years.

The TTartisan AF 56mm f/1.8 is only $130 and comes for Nikon, Sony and Fuji APS-C, and to my surprise works great in spite of its givaway price. Full review coming.

NEW: All Canon Mirrorless Ultrawide Lenses Compared.

I was starting to get confused with all the ultrawide lenses coming out of Canon these past few years, and realized that there are now SIX of them, FIVE of which are full frame.

Each is superbly sharp; the real differences are in the details which I compare here, as well as suggesting which is best for each kind of shooting.

Bless Canon, they have more and better lenses than all of what Nikon and Sony put out. All Canon's ultrawide zooms are stabilized, which is sorely missing from Nikon's and Sony's meager offerings. As you know, sensor-shift stabilization doesn't work well in the corners of ultrawide shots because geometry requires that the corners of the sensor move more than the center for ultrawide lenses.

Here are some goodies you might want from B&H:

Digital Smart Telescopes.

Tracking Clock Drive Camera Mounts (so you can make long exposures without blur).

How to Shoot the Eclipse

Shoot at your longest lens' largest aperture.

Use the longest exposure on a tripod that you can without getting blur from the motion of the moon. I love my geared head for precise framing.

Now set the ISO by trial and error until you get the exposure you want. It's digital, so look at the LCD!

Hint: turn down your LCD brightness, otherwise you'll get underexposure because the LCD looks so bright outside in the dark! Trust me, what looks overexposed standing around in the dark will be the right exposure later when seen in daylight, even with your LCD brightness turned all the way down. Bracket.

The total eclipse will be dark, so ideally you'd have a clock drive to track the moon and allow long exposures at your lowest ISO.

On full-frame unless you've got a 2,000mm lens like the one below you'll probably want to set your image to crop to 1.6× APS-C or 1.5× DX crop, unless you really need more empty black around the sides.

Celestron 8

Nikon mounted with a T-mount on a Celestron 8. bigger.

For astronomy like this, man-up and get a real telescope for next time. Personally I love my American-made classic Celestron 8" scope on its clock-drive mount with slow-motion controls for precise framing, which only costs about $500 used if you know How to Win at eBay. I prefer this original made-in-USA version with a 120V synchronous motor I power from an extension cord or a power station; the newer digital ones cost more and are too wishy-washy for me. The optics are unchanged.

$199 off (scratch & dent w/full new warranty): Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 MACRO IS STM: $250.

I love this lens; it's a fast wide/normal lens, it's a macro lens, it's stabilized, it has two control rings and it's almost free.

No one else makes anything like this. Nikon's Z 35/1.8 is an expensive piece of plastic with no macro and no stabilization, and Sony's 35/1.8 is just as lame, with an equally sky high price and no macro and no stabilization. Neither has an extra control ring, either. Why do people still shoot Nikon or Sony?

Be Sure to Reset your Camera Clocks to Daylight Time.

While almost everything today rests itself automatically or makes it obvious if a clock on the wall is an hour slow, make a conscious effort to reset every one of your cameras to daylight time, otherwise in about six months you'll realize that every picture you've taken has the clock set an hour slow 😁.

SOLVED: Getting Grid Lines in the Z50 II.

Nikon's manual left out an important step, so I never could figure it out. My friend Stephen Dixon just found the missing step, and so I updated the grids section my Z50 II guide.

It's a lot of clicks, but indeed you have a lot of flexibility in how and what to display for grid lines in the Z50 II.

$900 Off: Canon R5 & RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM: $4,099.

NEWSFLASH: The original R5 now has automatic finder brightness control, as of new firmware since about 2022!

The only reason that I found the R5 II significantly better than this old original R5 was that the original R5 had only manual finder brightness control, which is a big no-no because then you have to reset the finder brightness every time you go in our outside. All good cameras have automatic finder brightness control, which was sorely lacking in the original R5.

I need to go back and rewrite much of my recommendations as well as my original R5 review, since today I can't recall any serious benefit the Mk II offers for my use (what's different and new in the Mk II version).

$490 off (open box w/full new warranty): Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM: $1,709.

$70 off (open box w/full new warranty): Nikon Z 35mm f/1.8: $627.

25 February 2025, Tuesday

NEW: Zeiss Otus ML 85mm f/1.4 for Canon, for Nikon and for Sony. Also at Adorama for Canon, for Nikon and for Sony.

No autofocus (manual focus only, like it's 1933), 77mm filters, 37.4 oz./1,061g, 2.6'/0.8m close-focus, 0.12× macro ratio, 10-blade diaphragm.

So this was Zeiss' "big news?" Boring! LOSERS! Total click bait. I'd rather use my classic AI NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4s for general manual focus shooting. I'm sure its manual focus feel is superior and I prefer its size, weight, color graphics and 9-bladed diaphragm over the new Zeiss. This Zeiss is a pig, at over two pounds! This "new" lens doesn't even focus any closer than the AI NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4s. Zzzzz.

The classic AI NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4s has classic performance, while the modern RF 85mm f/1.2L, Z 85mm f/1.2 and FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II all have the same extraordinary performance as this Zeiss, as well as native electronic lens corrections most likely absent with the dino-Zeiss. My past tests of these giant Zeiss had more spherochromatism than the other lenses, and spherochromatism cannot be corrected electronically.

Obviously this Zeiss is a special lens for shooters with special needs, specifically astronomy and satellite reconnaissance, where it's always shot at f/1.4 and needs the highest resolution and contrast possible wide-open. For general photography, I'm not excited — but many of you are. Enjoy!

NEW: Zeiss Otus ML 50mm f/1.4 for Canon, for Nikon and for Sony. Also at Adorama for Canon, for Nikon and for Sony.

No autofocus (manual focus only, like it's 1950), 67mm filters, 23.9 oz./677g, 1.6'/0.5m close-focus, 0.14× macro ratio, 10-blade diaphragm.

Oh wow, another manual-focus 50mm f/1.4? I was so waiting for this — not! Nikon invented this 75 years ago back in 1950, and this new giant lens is over four times heavier than Nikon's first 50mm f/1.4, and still manual focus.

Again, this Zeiss another special purpose lens for special needs, not for general photography. If you demand critical definition wide-open at f/1.4 maybe this giant lens is for you, while for general shooting get an autofocus lens made by your camera maker. I doubt that this Zeiss is any sharper than the superb RF 50/1.4L, Z 50/1.4 or FE 50/1.4 GM. With automated correction native with camera-maker lenses and not likely with this Zeiss, I would expect better practical results with the modern Canon RF, Nikon Z and Sony FE lenses.

Sorry; I wish new products were actually new. I'm getting tired of clickbait reruns — and there are penalties when a brand clickbaits us in advance for no-news news.

Sharp pictures come from sharp vision. Lenses have little to do with it.

FREE: FEMA May Buy You New Cameras, Computers, Photo and Pro Audio Gear if You Lost Them in the Fires or Floods!!!

If you lost cameras, lenses, filters, microphones, musical instruments or other tools you use to create your income, FEMA may be able to help you.

I just heard about this on the radio and had to research it myself. Thankfully I haven't lost anything, and I'd suggest if you did, that you jump on this pronto as we never know when they may cancel this or run out of money.

I'll leave it to you to poke around FEMA for the program that applies to your particular disaster.

Be careful as you balance insurance versus charity and other sources of replacement; FEMA and insurance aren't going to pay you twice if someone else has.

Of course it's not free; I pay an hellacious amount of taxes for this, but again you get the idea.

Good luck and God bless.

Nikon 13mm f/5.6 AI-s.

Serial Number 175,960 is offered again, with box, filters and decrepit cases for $73,580.65 by PhotoAlps GmbH over eBay.

This is the same sample of lens that was last sold by Houston Camera Exchange over eBay for $50,000 back in December 2023.

PhotoAlps GmbH and Boris and Arsenal all seem to be the very same guy trying to resell this. Obviously it's not worth the $78,000 he was asking back in fall of 2024. Since the serial numbers are unique it's easy to track resales.

Minolta Dimage Multi PRO Scanner

Minolta DIMAGE Scan Multi Pro.

Updated: Minolta DIMAGE Scan Multi Pro.

I updated this review from 20 years ago for people who want to get one of these scanners today and make scans on modern computers.

It was, and still is, the best desktop film scanner ever made for 35mm and medium-format film. It was the last of an era when "digital" meant scanning your film to edit in a computer. This was from before there were consumer DSLRs.

Today I have my lab (tell them I sent you) scan everything when they develop my film. Scanning at home was a pain back in the 1990s, and even more so today.

Help me help you

I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.

If you find this as helpful as a book you might have had to buy or a workshop you may have had to take, feel free to help me continue helping everyone.

If you've gotten your gear through one of my links or helped otherwise, you're family. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks!

If you haven't helped yet, please do, and consider helping me with a gift of $5.00.

The biggest help is when you use any of these links when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. eBay is always a gamble, but all the other places always have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.

Thanks for reading!

Ken
