Nikon 35Ti.
Nikon's, and arguably the world's, greatest point-and-shoot of all time: a titanium masterpiece with matrix metering, balanced fill-flash and a superb lens in a metal helicoid with a 7-bladed diaphragm, has steadily increased in value over the years.
I paid $300 for mine used in 2009 over eBay and the price stayed stable through 2016.
As of awesome April 2019 it climbed to about $500, and today it sells for about $750 used (range: $620 ~ $900) if you know How to Win at eBay.
Good film cameras, like classic cars and fine art, continue to rise in value as no one makes any new ones, and fewer and fewer old ones are around as more and more people start to appreciate them.
Let's face it, what idiot would pay $500 for toystore rubbish like the Pentax 17 when for not much more you can get an icon like the 35Ti, or for half as much get a fully professional 35mm camera like a Nikon FE2 with a 50mm f/1.4 AI-s lens?
I said this decades ago: film camera values are going nowhere but up. I find it highly unlikely that anyone would devote the development resources necessary to develop any film camera today that's better than what was made in the good old days when all the development budget went to film cameras.
Even if I think people who shoot film are nuts (digital is much easier and gives far better results today than 35mm ever did), plenty of eager young people who don't know any better get all excited by this now mysterious, and therefore intriguing, obsolete technology.
How to Shoot Film.
Why Fixed Lenses Take Better Pictures.
I clarified that the Nikon AF 18mm f/2.8D is a pretty good lens today, even though I dumped on it back in 2008 because it cost five times as much as the AF 20mm f/2.8 and had the same performance. Today the AF 18mm f/2.8D is a great lens for DSLRs rather than a wide zoom when you're packing it along with a zoom starting at 24mm or 28mm as it's shorter than the 20mm and prices have become about the same.
I added this introduction:
Photography is art. Art is showing others what you're feeling. FARTing helps us do this.
Knowing everything about modulation transfer functions, bicubic convolution, quantization matrices and raw conversion software has nothing to do with identifying and expressing our feelings, which is everything when it comes to making great pictures.
Following this simple procedure will help you identify what it is that you're feeling, and then show it in a way that will excite that same feeling in those who see your images — leading to the ooohs and aaaahs that get your pictures noticed..
28 December 2024, Christmas Week Saturday

Nikon AF-S 40mm f/2.8 DX.
The classic AF-D 40mm f/2.8 DX Micro came out in 2011 and is still a great little DX macro for $277 new at Adorama, at B&H, at Crutchfield and at Amazon, or about $125 used if you know How to Win at eBay.
It's a DSLR lens, and also works great on DX mirrorless (think Z50 II) with an FTZ or FTZ II.
$27 off (open box w/full new warranty): DJI RS 4 gimbal: $522.

30% off comfort: Freehands Thinsulate Gloves.
These are designed for winter photography, with fold-back nosepicker fingertips (sorry, that what we call gloves like this in motorcycling terms) for thumbs and index fingers, and seem to claim that all the fingers work on our iPhones and touchscreens. I also like that these come in XXL; my long fingers barely fit in XL gloves.
In Stock: Fuji XF 500mm f/5.6 R LM OIS WR.
$70 off: WD 12 TB Elements Desktop External Hard Drive: $239.99.
HINT: I bought three of these WD Elements 18 TB drives in September 2023 and returned them because they were 50% slower for backups than the two-year-old Seagates I had been using! Instead I bought three Seagate Expansion Drives which are 50% faster and smaller and better looking and easier to move around and less delicate than the gloss black plastic of the WDs.
Sadly drive makers no longer make any claims or offer any specifications as to how fast are their hard drives so now we have to fly blind. Drive makers deceptively list only the interface (USB 3) rates, whish have noting to do with the much slower read/write rates of the mechanical hard drive. Listing the interface rate is like rating the top speed of a car as the speed of light because you can look at it; obviously the car itself is much slower.
I tested the WD drives which gave random speeds of 50-100 MB/s, while these Seagate Expansion Drives run at a solid 200-250 MB/s which is getting close to SSD transfer rates. I use a fleet of these for daily backups using Super Duper software.
Better Deal: $170 off: Seagate 20 TB Expansion Desktop External Hard Drive: $279.99.

$100 off: Canon EF 50mm f/1.4: $299.
I have to laugh; this popular lens has been unchanged since about 1991. Optically it's probably optically the worst normal autofocus lens in Canon's lineup; it's one of the very first ever for the EOS system and has never been updated; its a traditional spherical design, and priced accordingly.

29 November 2024 Black Friday
As I hope you know, these deals come and go every day. They look like they're set in print below, while actually I sometimes edit the deals far below if it's relevant. Always look down this page to older days as there are loads of deals that started a while ago, and on the same note know that many deals disappear quickly, so if you see something you want, grab it now. Most every dealer to which I link allows full cash back returns on anything through January 31st.
Santa's bringing someone an R100!
The R50 isn't any cheaper today than it's been all year, while the R100 is practically being given away from now through Monday, December 2nd (I chronicle all the prices over time of every camera at Price in the Specifications section of each of my reviews). The R100 is the perfect for a budding young photographer:

About $379 used with lens if you know How to Win at eBay - which is more than the Black Friday new price today!
Of course the R6 II remains my favorite camera of all time, and it's been at an historic low of $1,999 for some time. I much prefer the R6 II to the more expensive EOS R1, R3 or R5 II or anything from LEICA or Nikon or HASSELBLAD or anything from anyone, regardless of price. As I keep saying, the ergonomics of the R6 II are superior as it has one more rear control dial than the R1, R3 or R5 II, picture quality is unbeaten and it also runs and tracks action at 40 FPS in its sleep. My R6 II does everything and makes it super easy — a better combination for my needs than any other camera at any price, ever.

Storage
Laugh all you want, but I use one of these in a self-powered USB-C enclosure as my master DATA drive on which I store every digital asset, photo, video, document, music and movie libraries and everything I've accumulated in 40 years of computer use on this one self-powered drive. I love that I shoot JPG so everything fits on just this one drive. Every photo you see on this site? It lives on my sample of this SSD. I use this cheaper enclosure that works fine, just that I'd get this much nicer OWC enclosure next time. Either of these are self-powered from the USB-C port; plug and play.
This is an even faster SSD, but it requires external power adapter and has a bigger case.
$225 off: Samsung 8 TB 460 MB/s portable SSD: $429.99.
I may order one of these for myself when I'm done writing about it. This is a tough rubber-covered self-powered SSD. It's small, tough, practical and the least expensive of this bunch. It's thicker than the SanDisk below.
New and $100 off: SanDisk 8 TB Extreme 1,000 MB/s SSD: $699.99.
It's about time; I've been waiting for this series to make it to 8 TB; I have a 2 TB version I bought a few years ago on one of these Black Friday sales. It's fast, tough, tiny & self powered, but 8 TB is expensive. Personally I'm perfectly happy with 460 MB/s for my bulk data storage; I don't need 1,000 MB/s.
This SanDisk would be my first choice since it most easily pops in a pocket or computer bag, but it's also the most expensive.
I tested how fast Photo Mechanic can draw all my thumbnails and swap among full-resolution images with the same huge folders of images on my Samsung 8 TB 560 MB/s SSD (tests at 500 MB/s with the Black Magic speed test app) as compared to the same folder stored on my MacBook Pro's internal SSD (tests at 2,700 MB/s). I saw no difference, so I'm not paying more for 1,000 MB/s versus 460 MB/s SSDs; I'm not running programs from these SSDs.
The only reason I went to an SSD in 2023 versus a mechanical hard drive that only tested at 150 MB/s for my data was because the hard drive would go to sleep, and every time I needed to read or write to it I had to wait for it to spin-up; once it was spinning it was plenty fast for what I needed. Don't let marketing people make you pay more for what you don't need, unless of course you're running your operating system from one of these.

27 November 2024, Wednesday

My friend Ted Forbes sent me an advance copy of his most excellent upcoming new book Visually Speaking. I'm only partway through, and already love his image-centric approach to great photography. He's all about practical advice rather than the obtuse pedagogy (hard to understand) but oddly popular works of Freeman Patterson or all the other books that drone on about cameras and lenses or are filled with computer screenshots.
There are excerpts at Amazon, so check it out and get a copy.
X100VI Update

Fujifilm X100VI.
Even though Fuji dumped its production to China so we'd hope Fuji could make enough of them to meet our demand, the X100VI is still so hard to get that it sells for an average of $1,900 used at eBay (even if you know How to Win at eBay) or you can order it for just $1,599 brand new at B&H in black, at B&H in silver, at Adorama in black or at Adorama in silver if you're willing to be patient.
Secret Insider Pro Tip: Personally I prefer my X100F (2017-2020), which sells for about $997 used at eBay, over the X100V (2020-2024) or the X100VI because Fuji removed the four-way rear multicontroller from the X100V and X100VI! Thus I'm not buying the X100VI just to look cool and have to use idiotic "touch function" swipes to do what I can do with direct clicks on my X100F.
Forget waiting for this X100VI and just get a used X100F and laugh all the way to the bank! Look at the back of the X100F and see its programmable multicontroller, while you'll see the back of the X100V and back of the X100VI have nothing but a blank space where the multicontroller used to be! If you actually shoot rather than just talk about it, the X100F is much better. Real-world lens and sensor and AF performance is the same, while the ergonomics and shootability of the X100F make it the best of the breed.

Sony A1 II and FE 24mm f/1.4 GM.
Rerun Season
Is it just me, or has it been rerun time in the camera world for the past several years? When was the last time we had a genuinely new camera that wasn't simply a sequel to what we already had? I guess I'm no one to complain, with my namesake Rocky movies making it to Rocky V just like the A7R V, but c'mon man, can I just go home if every new camera, like the A1 II, R5 II, Z50 II, X100 VI and RX100 VII (!) are 90% the same as last year's camera?
All kidding aside, unlike movies, each camera remake is always better than the the original and with the release of the remake the original goes on sale so we all win, but the most recent genuinely new cameras I can recall are the EOS R7 and R10 (announced 24 May 2022), R50 (08 February 2023) and the R100 announced 24 May 2023.
And hey, when something genuinely innovative gets invented, like the EOS R7's self-leveling feature which rotates the sensor itself to keep horizons level, why hasn't that feature found itself in every other new camera? I want that in every camera.

$199 off (scratch & dent with full new warranty): Canon SL3 w/EF-S 18-55mm IS STM: $550.
The SL3 can make great images, but only if it gets correct focus. I found its very basic autofocus system misses focus more often than I'd like.
Almost Free: Canon EOS T100 DSLR: only $339 complete with EF-S 18-55mm III!
The T100 likewise can make great images, but it's a crummy camera. It also has iffy autofocus and further lacks automatic lens corrections that all mirrorless and even the SL3 have, so its images can have faint color fringes at the corners typical of digital cameras from 15 years ago.

Sony says that the A1 II is coming. So? I suppose the A1 III will be here in a few years, too. You can't make pictures with a camera you can't buy. Sony says they'll have something to say next Tuesday, the 19th.

$143 off (scratch & dent with full new warranty): Sony ZV-1 II: $655.
$35 Canon Wireless Flash Commander

Canon 90EX Flash & Wireless Commander.
I hadn't realized this, but my friend John in Australia noticed that this tiny flash also works as a wireless commander.
I ignored this tiny Canon 90EX back when it came out in 2012 because it is very low powered and takes a long time to recycle when used as a main light, however today it sells for only about $35 used at eBay (How to Win at eBay) or used at Amazon, and it's tiny and probably the best tiny wireless commander you can get for Canon.
Have fun!

$500 off: Canon EOS R6 II, RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, spare battery & more free goodies: $3,099.
The EOS R6 II is my favorite camera of all time, better than any of my other Canons, Nikons, LEICAs, Sonys or anything, ever, and it's under two grand. Get one. I prefer it to the R5 II because the R6 II has all its control dials. Canon removed the mode dial from the R5 II and replaced it with a dual-purpose button to make room for the silly top LCD. I prefer having all three dials on my R6 II rather than just two dials on my R5 II, and no, I don't care about the insignificant difference between the rated resolutions. Even if the price was the same, I still prefer my R6 II over my R5 II.

Canon RF 200-800mm IS USM f/6.3-9.
It was in stock yesterday afternoon when I posted this, but sold out again this morning. No big deal; I got mine by ordering it at B&H and being patient
These didn't last long, especially seeing how they sell every day for about $2,000 USED at eBay. They run about about $2,400 from third parties at Amazon, and the same $2,400 used ("renewed") at Amazon.
I'd also order it at Adorama and at Crutchfield; I have mine from B&H because I ordered it months ago. Get yours right now at B&H before they sell out to scalpers who resell them at eBay.
Yes, I'm working on my review and you've seen some snaps below. It's an ultrasharp lens with great stabilization; it's easy to shoot the moon or the disc of the sun hand-held. Bravo Canon!

To us music lovers, Q was a modern-day Mozart. Q created, composed, produced, conducted and arranged more different kinds of music over more years than Mozart did. Q was everywhere for over 70 years and was still working this year. He earned 28 Grammys.
Q was always listed in the credits of the work he produced, while the albums came out in the names of greats like Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Donna Summer and so much more. Of course we all remember Austin Powers jumping out of the scoring stage screen and introducing Q as providing the movie's mojo at in the opening of Goldmember.

New from Canon

Canon RF-S 7.8mm f/4 STM Dual Pseudo~Stereoscopic Lens.
Weird lens, exclusively for the R7, that attempts to shoot in stereoscopic (3D) for VR applications, however the two lenses are so close together (only a half-inch or 11.8mm) that I doubt it's worth the effort. Canon only claims it has a stereo effect out to a subject distance of about 20 inches (half a meter).

Help me help you
I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.
If you find this
as helpful as a book you might have had to buy or a workshop you may
have had to take, feel free to help me continue helping everyone.
If you've gotten your gear through one of my links or helped otherwise, you're family. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks!
If you haven't helped yet, please do, and consider helping me with a gift of $5.00.
The biggest help is when you use any of these links when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. eBay is always a gamble, but all the other places always have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.
Thanks for reading!
