This 100% all-content, junk-free website's biggest source of support is when you use those or any of these links to my personally approved sources I've used myself for way over 100 combined years when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. Sony does not seal its boxes in any way, so never buy at retail or any other source not on my personally approved list since you'll have no way of knowing if you're missing accessories, getting a defective, damaged, returned, non-USA, store demo or used teleconverter — and all of my personally approved sources allow for 100% cash-back returns for at least 30 days if you don't love your new converter. I've used many of these sources since the 1970s because I can try it in my own hands and return it if I don't love it, and because they ship from secure remote warehouses where no one gets to touch your new teleconverter before you do. Buy only from the approved sources I've used myself for decades for the best prices, service, return policies and selection.

Woman and the Sea, 5:11 PM, Wednesday, 29 January 2025. Sony A7R V, Sony FE 400-800mm G OSS at 800mm, Sony FE 2× Teleconverter (1,600mm effective) wide-open at f/16 (effective) at 1/250 on a monopod at Auto ISO 400 (LV 14.0), Radiant Photo software to fill in the shadows. bigger or camera-original 60 MP © 4 MB JPG file.

This is from about 300 feet (100 meters) away. The cool thing about ultra-ultra-teles is that the further away you get from a sunset subject, the bigger the glowing background becomes. At the time this person was so far away as to be pretty much invisible, while with the huge magnification it makes the sunset glinting off the sea explode with color.

Any color fringes you may see (blue and green fringes on top of the sun) are caused by the Earth's atmosphere, not this lens. This is how we get green flashes, and this lens has so much magnification that it lets us see there marvelous details in our world that are invisible to our naked eyes.

This is a teleconverter for Sony's longer lenses. See each of my Sony lens reviews to see if your lens works with this converter.

As of February 2025, it's compatible with these lenses — but this will change as new lenses come out:

FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS

FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II

FE 70-200mm f/4 Macro G OSS II

FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS

FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS

FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS

FE 400-800mm f/6.3-8 G OSS

FE 600mm f/4 GM OSS

It multiplies your lens focal length(s) by 2, and also multiplies every aperture setting by 2 (two stops slower). Your finder will show these slower speeds as you set your lens from the camera, for instance, a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens becomes a 140-400mm f/5.6 equivalent.

As a general rule, it works with lenses whose internal optics leave enough rear clearance to allow the front optics of this converter to poke their way in. Most lenses have glass all the way to the mount, and obviously this converter won't work with those.

Lenses like the FE 700-200mm GM OSS have enough room at the rear to accommodate a teleconverter:

Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II

Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS. bigger.

This converter can't be stacked with any other teleconverter because both of Sony's teleconverters have no room at the rear; their rear elements go all the way back to the mount.

Completely different from 35mm SLRs and DSLRs, mirrorless cameras work great with teleconverters. The finder images are just as bright and sharp as always and autofocus is fast as well.

Optical performance is entirely dependant on your main lens.

This converter magnifies everything, good and bad, by 100% (2 times).

You're losing two stops of light and therefore have to use shutter speeds four times as long (or quadruple your ISO or open the diaphragm an extra two stops or any combination to get two more stops of exposure), any or all of which can soften your image — at no fault of the converter or your lens themselves.

If you have problems with sharpness, this converter will also magnify all these problems.

The converter itself is super sharp; it's all about your skill or lack thereof as a photographer and your ability to conquer real-world sharpness-robbing conditions.

2× teleconverters are very helpful, since they work great on mirrorless cameras. The real question is if you have enough light to get the results you want without having to resort to much higher ISOs or shutter speeds slow enough to let camera or subject motion blur your images.

I have always owned these and pull them out for extreme astro work. I don't need them for sports; I use lenses long enough in the first place. I love my 100-400mm lenses and haven't carried a 70-200mm since back in the dark days of 35mm film.
