One-Man Show this Friday

My buddy Scott is having a show at Compére Collective in Red Hook this Friday. He'll be showing works from his HASSELBLAD as on the poster above, digital, and you name it. Check it out!
He made the shot above on his HASSELBLAD 500C with a ZEISS 50mm f/4 Distagon at f/5.6 on Ilford FP 120, on a tripod in Sunny’s Bar in Red Hook, Brooklyn, August 2012.
New: The New Math from Nikon
If you track prices as I do (all these lenses have their historical prices versus date documented towards the end of the Specifications section of every product review), what I've never seen done before is that Nikon has softened the appearance of the tariff blow by raising prices as expected, and then immediately discounting some of them and turning a higher catalog price into what looks like a deeper discount if you don't track historical prices.
For instance, the Z 17-28mm f/2.8 has sold for $1,197 ever since it came out in 2022. Nikon just raised the US catalog price by $100 to $1,299.99, and now offers a "$200 discount" on their $100 increase, for a net discount of $100. I'm glad I document this so I can reclaim my sanity!
The red "$xxx off" titles below are what Nikon's claiming, not the discount over the price at introduction which is how I usually like to look at it. Even with recent price hikes, many older cameras like the Z7 II are still much less than their prices at introduction.
Some of these lenses are less expensive than they have ever been, while other Nikon products have gone up from what they were this summer. I hope you all realize that camera prices are always subject to fluctuation from dollar/yen exchange rates and loads of other conditions, that's why I document them every time I look them up.
I've been checking prices changes since the 1970s when I'd check B&H's printed prices as published in their monthly ads in what were called "camera magazines" fifty years ago.

Amazon has a silly price up right now. Here it is at Amazon at the correct price. Of course the first thing I did was hit the option to report this to Amazon; it reminds me of how frustrated the police are when there is a problem and everyone starts livestreaming an incident rather than calling the police first so they can do something about it.
Nikon Zƒ
The Nikon Zƒ now comes in ten different color combinations!
I spent all day yesterday looking them all up for you. What I found interesting is that Crutchfield, at least yesterday, was $200 higher than everyone else. Prices are all going up, so this suggests that the other dealers will soon be at the higher price, so that as I've been saying, today is the day to get what you want.

20 September 2025, Saturday
I just did, and here's How to Transfer all Your Data and Apps to Your New iPhone.
I always wait till I have the day free to do this with my full attention. I also got the newest AirPods Pro 3 and the Apple Watch Ultra 3. I can't wait to tell you all about them as soon as I get them up and running!
Don't have yours yet?
I got the 17 Pro Max as I love having the biggest possible screen to show my photos, and I want the newest higher-resolution telephoto camera. I am intrigued by the iPhone Air which also has a pretty decent sized screen, but lets, face it, I'm a power user and want and use all three rear cameras in the larger iPhone. The iPhone Air has but one basic rear camera, excellent for basic users.
Hint: The basic 256 GB version is usually plenty of storage if you know how to use cloud services, which store everything in the cloud rather than on your phone.
The higher storage options let you travel with a ton of downloaded videos right in your pocket in case you need them offline, which most people don't. Downloaded video is the biggest user of storage; apps, photos and documents don't use as much.
Online streaming video and remotely stored documents don't use or need local storage. I get a lot of storage, but it's more of a luxury just to be able to tote a ton of data if I'm offline. Tens of thousands of photos should fit OK in 256 GB.
Hint: It's easy to see exactly how much storage you have, and how much of it you have free in your current phone.
In your old iPhone, go to SETTINGS > GENERAL > ABOUT and it will show your phone's capacity, and how much of it you have free. Subtract one from the other and that's how much you're actually using.
Some people freak out thinking they may need a lot, while in fact they may not be using much storage.
We always need maybe 25 GB free to make everything run well and be able to install updates, but if you've got hundreds of GB free in your current phone, I doubt you'd need more storage than you have in your current model. On the other hand if you don't have much storage available and don't want to dump unused videos or apps and photos, now is the time to step up to more storage. Again, just check your SETTINGS.

$300 off (scratch & dent with full new warranty): Canon R10: $650!!!
Use coupon code L5C46HAE or check the coupon box for 15% off, which would make it $28. While it's only a manual flash and a bit cool at 6500K, it is tiny and has its own built-in battery that charges with USB-C.

This crazy lens covers Super 35mm (29.6mm image circle), and covers 24 × 36mm full frame when you use the built-in 1.5× extender for a 16~80mm range.
Its not cheap (over $35,000), weighs almost seven pounds and has a 112mm filter thread.
A brand-new inexpensive 12× optical zoom pocket point-and-shoot! Honestly my S100 still takes great pictures, just that my iPhone replaced it a decade ago for me.
New: Sigma Full Frame 20-200mm for Sony & L, also at Adorama.
New: Sigma Full Frame 28-45mm T2 Cine for Sony & L, also at Adorama.
New: Sigma Full Frame 35mm f/1.2 for Sony & L, also at Adorama.
New: Sigma Full Frame 135mm f/1.4 for Sony & L, also at Adorama.
This is the least expensive the R6 II has ever been, as you can see it its price history at my review.
Every maker has big price hikes coming any day now for the fall tariff season, and I doubt that we'll ever see the R6 II this low again. The only other time it was this inexpensive was back in April, so if you want one, now is the time. While Crutchfield is saying this is $300 off, actually it's $600 off its introductory price.
$400 off: Canon R5 Mk II: $3,899, also at B&H.

$120 off: Canon R100 & RFS 18-45mm IS STM: $529.
$300 off: Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM: $2,299.
$300 off: Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM: $2,299.
$300 off: Canon RF 100-500mm L IS USM: $2,799.

$500 off: OM System 100-400mm IS (200-800mm eq.): $999.99.
If I was a bird shooter, I would totally be using my OM1 Mk II because the format magnifies the effective focal length of every lens by 2×, and OM system has a better selection of affordable ultra-tele zooms than anyone once you realize this. The only way to get 200-800mm in Canon is huge and more expensive, and there is no way to get this in Nikon or Sony.
$369 off (open box with full new warranty): LEICA Q3 mit 43mm APO-SUMMICRON ASPH: $7,011.

The unobtainable X100VI was in-stock at Adorama, only in silver (the good version) and not for long, so get it before it sells out and the price goes even more sky high when Fuji corrects the price for tariffs soon.
Get it while you can!!!
Oh well, it sold out a few hours after I listed this. Sorry, but that's why I made it big and in Italics. No big deal; place an order and it will ship as soon as it comes in, often well before anyone ever gets enough to mark it as "In Stock."
These are so hard to get that people are actually paying an average of $1,860 for used ones at eBay!

TTArtisan AF 56mm f/1.8 ED for Fuji (also comes for Nikon Z and for Sony).
Not bad for a $129 lens!
26 MP APS-C fixed-lens posh, pocketable point-and-shoot for $1,497.
It has a collapsible lens like the Nikon 35Ti so it's pocketable unlike the X100 and RX1R III, and of course that collapsing mechanism is also what usually dies first in these cameras.

Just DO IT!
Think you want to wait a little and see what prices are going to do with tariffs?
As I've been encouraging everyone, the time is now to get what you want for the next couple of years. Actually the time was back a few months ago when I first warned everyone.
Tariffs haven't been fully applied yet, and even after they do, the full effects will take a while to trickle down to us through the supply chain, but sadly Canon's cameras, just as an example I had handy, have risen so strongly this year that the camera model one step down from what you had intended to get now costs almost as much as what you thought you were going to pay for what you really wanted! I hate it when friends come to me with a budget and I suggest which model to get, and whoops, now that only gets them one step down:
Roughly to scale.

This is from my Canon R7, R10, R50 and R100 comparison. Other brands I'm sure are similar; I just happened to be updating these prices and was shocked when I laid them out this clearly.
It's like real estate just after COVID. Houses and rents doubled in the course of the year, and they're not coming back down anytime soon — if ever.
Please don't wait this one out. I can't imagine camera prices ever being as low as they are again today. Yesterday's gone. Don't let the trade wars price you out of your new camera.
Thankfully the old full-frame format has more margin in it, so those prices are still low as makers simply eat the expenses for now. My favorite full-frame, the R6 Mk II, is still only $1,999, as you can see at my price history table. Full-frame today is only for people who love out-of-focus backgrounds, otherwise for mirrorless, APS-C is the way to go. This isn't film, where format mattered just to get a clean, sharp image. With digital, everything works fantastic today in APS-C or even micro 4/3. Any pedagogical penchant for "better high ISOs" might only be visible at five-digit ISOs and above, which no one should be using if you know what you're doing. In photography, light is everything. If it's dark, fix it.
$50 Off: Canon R50: $710. (Note that this "sale" is actually more than it used to cost. You should have bought it before, and if you didn't, get it NOW!)
$50 Off: Canon R50 & RFS 18-45mm IS STM: $830.
$80 Off: Canon R50, RFS 18-45mm IS STM & RFS 55-210mm IS STM: $1,049.

Viltrox AF 28mm f/4.5 for Nikon Z, for Sony and for Fuji.
Tough, tiny lens that works surprisingly well — but it's fixed at f/4.5 and has no ability to focus manually.
I can't believe I spent a week going into such depth to review a $99 lens, but so be it.

$300 Off: Canon R5 Mk II & RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM: $5,199.
$200 Off: Canon R5 & RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM: $4,199.
While this is the old R5, there isn't enough different to me to justify the expense of the R5 II; I'd get this older version and laugh all the way to the bank!
$200 Off: Canon R6 Mk II & RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM: $3,199.

$100 Off: Canon R7 Content Creator Kit: $2,049.
$100 Off: Canon RF 15-30mm f/4.5~6.3 IS STM: $499.
Don't let its "slow" f/stop fool you. We're not shooting on film anymore, thank God, so this "slow" lens is more than fast enough to shoot the Milky Way and Andromeda Galaxy without even needing a clock-drive, and this shot is stopped down a stop because I forget to set it wide-open to f/4.5 rather than f/6.3!!!

The Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy as seen from Stoneman Meadow, Yosemite National Park, California, 8:39 P.M., 21 October 2022. Hot Headphone Deal Gets Hotter

Tozo HT2 ANC (Adaptive Noise Cancellation) Headphones.
I was very impressed with how great these cheap ANC headphones sounded back in 2023 after I adjusted the equalizer in the free app to voice them when they first came out at $50.
They sound just as great today, assuming you EQ them in the app as I show in my review, but today they're selling for just $32 at Amazon — and if you don't love them, just send them back.
I'm very impressed at how smooth I got them to sound with EQ, and especially their prodigious deep bass and subsonic performance which I rarely can get with unequalized headphones. Sadly very few, if any, other headphones have octave-band graphic EQs in their apps so we have very limited ability to voice them, assuming you're skilled with advanced tools like this.
By themselves these headphones are unimpressive, while the very flexible EQ lets us make the proverbial silk purse from a pig's ear. Once set with the app, they retain this EQ (sound) regardless of from what you play them.
I got mine directly from Tozo back in I'd also get mine at Amazon or at eBay (How to Win at eBay).

Secret Underground Book Preserve, San Diego, California, 12:58 P.M, Thursday, 24 July 2025 A. D.. iPhone 16 Pro Max 0.5× (2.22mm actual or 14mm eq.) camera at f/2.2 at 1/1,656 at Auto ISO 50 (LV 14.0), Skylum Luminar Neo software, split-toned print. bigger.
I love my iPhone 16 Pro Max, without which I'd have to haul my 4x5" camera, requisite tripod and 65mm f/8 SUPER-ANGULON and not be able to see what I was doing trying to focus and compose before I inevitably would be kicked out of this secure facility.
With my 16 Pro Max, all I did was snap this on my way back from sneaking down there looking for a bathroom, and I got my shot. Bravo!

25 July 2025, Friday - finally!
Man, I turn this page black for three days out of respect for the passing of Ozzy Osbourne, and the whole world goes away. The indefatigable Hulk Hogan passes, and so does Chuck Mangione, the guy who taught the world what was a Flügelhorn.
Sorry if I digress, but ever since I was a kid in the late 1970s and 1980s I worked in music, radio and recording, and we played the heck out of Ozzy and Chuck Mangione.
OK, so I'm turning this page back to white, not out of any disrespect for the other greats, but just to hope that nothing happens to Long Island hero Billy Joel. We played his records on-air more than anyone!

Otherwise I see it's still $580 at B&H (for Nikon Z and for Sony), at Adorama (for Nikon Z and for Sony) and at Amazon (for Nikon Z and for Sony), and about $400 used if you know How to Win at eBay.

I love this lens!!! I'm rarely a fan of off-brand lenses, but I love it when an upstart makes a lens that's different or better than the camera-maker lenses in some regards. This lens has optics just as good, and it's made of metal and adds a very handy LCD display.

Price Shifts
Maybe you don't live this market every day as I do, but if you haven't been paying attention, but a week or two ago Canon raised many prices by 10 to 15 percent. It will be a while until I get into every review and update this, and of course each review has an archive of price history so you know when things are up or down.
Good news is Nikon's prices are flat, and sometimes things go on sale, like today:
$100 off: Nikon Zf: $1,897.
$100 off: Nikon Zf & Z 40mm f/2 SE: $2,137.
$350 off: Nikon Z7 II: $1,947.
$350 off: Nikon Z7 II & Z 24-70mm f/4: $2,549.
$100 off: Nikon Z6 II: $1,497.
$100 off: Nikon Z6 II & Z 24-70mm f/4: $2,097.
$250 off: Nikon Z30, Z 16-50mm VR & Z 50-250mm VR: $947.
$150 off: Nikon Z 14-30mm f/4L $1,197.
My favorite ultrawide for Nikon.
$150 off: Nikon Z 105mm f/2.8 VR Macro: $897.
$250 off: Nikon Z 100-400mm VR: $2,447.
Likewise, my favorite general purpose tele for Nikon.
I'm guessing that because Canon makes almost everything domestically in Japan that they have to charge a fair price for skilled labor as international trade seems to be encountering more friction today, while Nikon, Sony and Fuji dump most manufacturing off to wherever they can pay the lowest wages, and thus the lesser brands may have more cushion built in to weather recent conditions.
In other words, I think companies who've dumped production outside of their home countries have been ripping us off for quite a few years that they've been doing this, and today simply may be ripping us off less as they have more room to eat the cost of increased trade friction, while Canon has probably been spending more to make quality products domestically and thus has less wiggle room. Who knows, it seems that cameras are the only products for which we haven't seen inflation all these years; just look at everything else in life. If you need anything, as I've been saying, it's the time to get it while you still can.
$337 off (scratch & dent with full new warranty): Nikon Zf c & Z 28mm f/2.8 SE: $800.
$160 off (open box with full new warranty): Nikon Z30 & Z 16-50mm VR: $537.
$247 off (open box with full new warranty): Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR: $2,050.
$32 off (open box with full new warranty): Nikon Z 2× Teleconverter: $617.
01 July 1925, 100 Years of Belmont Park
100 years ago today, San Diego Mission Beach's Belmont Park opened. It's San Diego's classic beachside amusement park, with The Plunge indoor pool and the Big Dipper Roller Coaster, beloved by all!

The Big Dipper, Belmont Park, Mission Beach, San Diego, California, 11:45 AM, Tuesday, 18 March 2025. Strongly cropped from Fuji X-T30 (which was in the room when it happened) and TTartisan 56mm f/1.8, f/5.6 at 1/680 at ISO 160, +0.7 stops compensation (LV 13¾), Dark faces lit with Radiant Photo software and deliberate vignetting added in Skylum Luminar Neo software. bigger.
It's nice that my Fuji X-T30 and TTartisan 56mm f/1.8 have so much resolution (like every camera today) that it's trivial to crop so I don't need to carry any stinking long tele. Here's the as-shot image before cropping:

Complete as-shot image from which the above was cropped and edited. bigger.
Camera maker really play the FUD card trying to scare the innocent into thinking they need 45 megapixels to crop. This was shot on a 26 MP camera from glorious 2019 with a $129 lens. Ha! The above is a 5× crop from APS-C, making the crop similar to a 400mm lens! Heck, if I had used a 400mm lens it's not likely it could have tracked focus, and even less likely I'd have it framed as I wanted it.
AF 135mm f/1.8!

Viltrox AF 135mm f/1.8. bigger.
I'm starting my formal review, while this one photo should say it all:

Pelican Hood Ornament, Packard 8, 10:54 AM, Saturday, 31 May 2025. Nikon Z5 II, Viltrox AF 135mm f/1.8 at f/1.8 at 1/2,000 at Auto ISO 100, +0.3 stops exposure compensation (LV 12⅔), Radiant Photo software. bigger or full-resolution.
Ultra sharp and completely devoid of chromatic aberrations, even wide-open at f/1.8, and oh, such soft and flawless bokeh!
I got my Nikon Z version directly from Viltrox, where you also can get it for Sony. Hint: Try Coupon code KENROCKWELL at checkout possibly for an 8% discount directly from Viltrox.
I'd also get the Nikon Z version at Adorama, at Amazon or at B&H, or get it used if you know How to Win at eBay.
I'd also get the Sony version at Adorama, at Amazon or at B&H, or get it used at eBay if you know How to Win at eBay.
This is a big, heavy, autofocus and almost all-metal domestic Chinese lens. It has a real metal filter thread and feels so much better than the crummy plastic threads of Nikon's, Canon's and Sony's versions. This Viltrox adds a relatively useful LCD display. Autofocus works great, using the same motor design as Canon's VCM and Sony's XD Linear systems. (The Nikon Z 135/1.8 still uses the old stepper motor system.)
I love it when third parties step in to offer quality products when the majors think we're all idiots and don't mind plasticy $2,000 lenses. I love having the choice, and this Viltrox is half the price. 出色的! Like I'm going to spend two large for a Chinese Sony 135/1.8 when I can get what seems like a sturdier one directly from China and pocket the price difference, instead of letting Sony and others keep the cash when they send production to China? No, and of course I have no idea what future support may be if we need service from Viltrox in a few years, but for half the price I'm not worrying.
The Viltrox comes for Nikon & for Sony. For Canon the RF 135/1.8L is superb except for the plastic filter ring; there's no Viltrox version for Canon and at least Canon makes their lens domestically in Japan, unlike Nikon or for Sony. Stick with Canon for Canon.
EF 11-24mm f/4L USM

Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM.
As I see it, it's being offered by a third party, and the good news is that if for some reason it's not right, Amazon has always ensured the third party makes it right. Otherwise I have no idea why this is so inexpensive; otherwise it's $3,199 at Adorama or at B&H, or you can get it used for only about $985 if you know How to Win at eBay, or get it used at KEH.
$500 off: Nikon Z8 & Z 24-120mm f/4: $4,597.
$500 off: Nikon D780: $1,497.
$450 off: Nikon D7500 & 18-140mm DX VR: $1,047.
$450 off: Nikon Z 14-24mm f/2.8: $2,047.

Help me help you
I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.
If you find this
as helpful as a book you might have had to buy or a workshop you may
have had to take, feel free to help me continue helping everyone.
If you've gotten your gear through one of my links or helped otherwise, you're family. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks!
If you haven't helped yet, please do, and consider helping me with a gift of $5.00.
The biggest help is when you use any of these links when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. eBay is always a gamble, but all the other places always have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.
Thanks for reading!
