Come with us this fall!

Rainbow Over Grant Lake, California, 3:42 P.M., Wednesday, 16 October 2024. Canon R5 II, Nikon 77mm Circular Polarizer II hand-held in front of my RF 24-240mm IS USM at 44mm at f/7.1 at 1/125 at Auto ISO 100 (LV 12.6), Skylum Luminar Neo software. More tech details. bigger or fit-to-screen.
This tour is all about FALL COLOR in The Sierra Nevada, east of Yosemite National Park. We'll be photographing FALL COLOR at abandoned mines, groves of aspens at Silver Lake and the June Lake Loop, sunrise over Mono Lake as seen from Conway Summit (the highest point along Route 395 at any point from México to Canada), the Bridgeport Reservoir, bizarre tufa formations at Mono Lake at dawn, possibly the huge ghost town of Bodie and of course Bridgeport's Travertine Hot Springs.
This is a guided photo tour where we shoot all day, every day. If you want hands-on technical help, my colleague Dave Wyman and I are available for all the one-on-one instruction and face-to-face coaching, consultation and critique you'd like. Believe me, there's more than enough time out in the field to answer all your questions without having to waste time sitting around in a hotel with computers. This is all about shooting and quick iPhone edits; it's not a Photoshop class (but ask me all you want about that, too).
Like all of our tours, we optimize the itineraries each day based on weather, climate, experience and intuition.
To register and for any questions, call or email Dave Wyman at (323) 377-7565 in Los Angeles. Dave Wyman is often out leading other tours, so he's not always sitting by his phone or computer. Dave organizes these tours while we both lead and teach.

Highest-Resolution Camera Ever Made by Nikon or Canon

Canon 5DS and 50mm f/1.2 L.
Canon's 50 megapixel 5 DS and 5DS R are still the highest resolution cameras ever made by Canon or Nikon, who stop at only 45MP in their top cameras today.
Sony and Fuji may make models with more pixels, but I find their color rendition inferior, so it never matters how many pixels you have if they're the wrong color.
Today these are very inexpensive used, and there of course is a huge pool of now very inexpensive and superb Canon EF lenses for it.
I just updated today's used prices in my Canon 5DS R Review:
5DS/R (no anti-alias filter)
About $875 used if you know How to Win at eBay.
$1,010 ~ $1,080 used at KEH.
$1,350, gray-market. Read the listing for details and see How to Win at eBay; this listing has been around for years, but changes over time.
$1,399 used at Amazon.
5DS (with anti-alias filter)
$1,599 used at Amazon.
$822 ~ $ 989 used at KEH.
About $745 used if you know How to Win at eBay.
$285 off (scratch & dent with full new warranty): Nikon D7500 & 18-140mm DX VR: $762.

New Photo added to Canon RF 10-20mm f/4L IS STM Review
I hadn't noticed how well this snap shows how sharp is the RF 10-20mm f/4L IS STM. It's perfectly sharp and devoid of color fringes clear out to the far corners, which is absolutely remarkable for such an ultra-ultra-ultrawide lens which taunts the rules of God and physics.
You can count every grain of sand right out to the corners! At 10mm, almost everything is in focus right up to your feet:

Crystal Pier, Pacific Beach, California, 6:47 PM, Tuesday, 03 September 2024. Canon EOS R5 II and RF 10-20mm f/4L IS STM at 10mm at f/6.3 at 1/160 at Auto ISO 100, (LV 12¾), perked up in Radiant Photo. bigger or camera-original (unprocessed) 45 MP © 6 MB JPG Quality 1 file.
Look at the camera-original JPG file; everywhere you look, it's flawless, and this is at the impossible 10mm ultra-ultra-ultrawide end of the zoom. Ultra-ultrawides were never this good! Did you notice the jetliner at the right edge?

Nikon Z 35mm f/1.2.
Superb optics, but not really any better than the much smaller Z 35mm f/1.4 at less than a quarter of the price.
This f/1.2 is for people deserve the very, very best, even if the pictures are the same as from the Z 35mm f/1.4.
The Z 35mm f/1.2 stands out mostly for its great sunstars rather than being any sharper or faster than anything else.

Nikon Z5 II and Z 24-50mm.
Nikon's newest, best and least expensive current full-frame mirrorless camera.
You can pay more, but I prefer this to any of the more expensive models. See why.
Vaporware: New Z8 Firmware 3.00 coming
Announced today and coming later, this free firmware 3.00 update adds, among other smaller things:
Pixel-shift shooting can work with either focus shift or exposure bracketing. Of course doing two multi-frame things at once means a lot more time taken for these sequences to complete.
Adds an in-camera focus limiter so you can set a range outside of which the camera wont' try to focus.
Adds a 400% magnification option.
Just checking the market, the Z8 sells for $3,496.95, or about $2,760 used if you know How to Win at eBay, and is also available used at KEH for $3,240 ~ $3,997 (KEH checks it out and warrantees it).
$30 off: Canon EOS R100: $449.
$73 off (scratch & dent with full new warranty): Nikon Z30 Creators' Kit: $674.
10 June 2025, Tuesday
$200 off: Canon EOS R5 : $2,799.
$200 off: Canon R5 & RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM: $3,899.
Now that new firmware adds automatic finder brightness control to the original R5 here, I don't see the point in paying more for the newer R5 II.
Actually these prices are $1,100 off the original price of the R5, and $1,200 off today's sale price for the essentially identical R5 II.
$450 off (scratch & dent with full new warranty): Sony APS-C 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS: $748.
05 June 2025, Thursday
New: 7Artisan 105mm T2.1 Cine Lens: $799.
New: 7Artisan 16mm T2.5 Cine Lens: $889.
Thank goodness: cine-mount (Arri) lenses with cine-standard geartrains at reasonable prices. I've been astonished at how many third-party photo gear makers repackage lenses and ask $10,000 for lenses that sell for$299 in photo mounts.
03 June 2025, Tuesday
I redrew the tables, added the latest prices and added a row for multiple exposure capability.
$58 off (scratch & dent with full new warranty): Canon RF 2× extender: $541.
$100 off: Nikon Z 40mm f/2: $197!
$50 off: Nikon Z 12-28mm DX PZ VR: $307.
$88 off (scratch & dent with full new warranty): Canon PowerShot V1: $811. Oops, sold out.
The Canon V1 is the newer version of the unobtainable G7X Mk III, and is optimized for video.
HINT: If you really want the older G7X Mk III, simply order it and wait patiently. They ship all the time - but only to people who have them on order. They won't show as "in stock" even though they are coming in and shipping out. The G7X Mk III is hot enough that there are never spares to put on the shelf as "in stock," you have to order it and be patient.
Or, just get a V1, which also comes new and is in-stock.

22 May 2025, Thursday
A tchotchke fixed-lens camera with a small point & shoot sensor egregiously called 1" mounted vertically. It's physically smaller than other X-series cameras and has a tiny 2.4" LCD.
It's not half-frame; it's one eighth frame.
Clearly the Fuji X Half is a trinket intended for the truly affected who just can't get enough of expensive quirky cameras, like the Pentax 17.
God bless Fuji for having the guts to make such a nutty camera. It has silly features like a fake film-type window that shows the fake film simulation you've selected. You people know who you are; it copies the outward appearance of a LEICA and again, many thanks to Fuji for putting this out there. It takes all kinds.
To put this in perspective, the Fuji X Half has an 8.8 x 13.3mm sensor with 18 MP, while my iPhone 16 Pro max has a 7.3 × 9.8mm sensor with 48 MP. iPhone has a 3.5x crop factor while the X½ has a 3.0x crop factor.
The iPhone should make much better pictures because it has much more processing smarts for better color, auto white balance and especially superior dynamic range, far less noise as the iPhone's ISO goes down to ISO 50 rather than ISO 200, has more sensors and lenses and the iPhone has a much faster f/1.8 lens and a far larger screen, and the ability to share and edit images for the whole world right in the iPhone.
Obviously the X½ is a camera you buy for the love and joy of shooting, not for making any sense technically.
For more fun, get one of the kits with a tiny, portable battery-operated printer so you can hand out photos at your next event.
I love ❤️❤❤️ DS.
DS is the "Defocus Smoothing" version of the regular RF 85mm f/1.2L USM that adds an apodization filter for dreamy bokeh. Here's my comparison of the two versions.
DS is for portraits and smooth, gentle images. The regular version is for low-light and astronomy.

Nikon Z5 II and Z 24-50mm.
High ISO performance is identical to the Z6 III, as I expected.
Also as I expected, the Z5 II is now my favorite Nikon Full-Frame mirrorless because it handles better and has better controls than any of the more expensive cameras. Especially now that the Z5 II has frame rates more than fast enough for anything and the same image quality as everything else, I don't see the point in buying any of Nikon's more expensive cameras. This is easy for me actually looking at images rather than believing any of the marketing baloney spewed out by camera makers; different packages, but the same images come from all of the models and the Z5 II handles the best. I'll take the Z5 II, please! Z8? No way, it has NO mode dial, just a button and a spinner requiring TWO hands!!! No bueno.
The Z5 II does it all, and has a real mode dial where I can reach it for one-handed shooting, sorely lacking in the more expensive cameras. Ha! Thank you, Nikon.
I just got my Nikon Z5 II and shot it all last week in San Luis Obispo with my Z 28-400mm VR.
I'll be editing my snaps, completing my Nikon Z5 II Review and publishing these shots in the coming weeks.
HAPPY SPRING!

New Place for Buying & Selling Used Gear: KEH Camera
Well, not really new, but new here. KEH started in 1979 and I've known about them since at least the 1990s as a huge source of used gear, possibly the world's largest used-only dealer.
I'm impressed at how easy their site is to use, immediately showing used prices for everything in all the different conditions, and giving instant quotes for buying your used gear, just use the "search" to identify what you'd like to sell to them and poof!, a value instantly appears.
I haven't personally used them in over 30 years since back when they mailed out printed catalogs of cameras and prices, but everyone I've spoken to who has used them has been very happy with them, both buying and selling.
They have a 21-day return period (subject to a $25 charge unless something is defective or you're exchanging it for something else) and a 180-day warranty.
Don't forget that Adorama and B&H also offer used-gear buying and selling and have probably been doing it longer than KEH; just that their sites aren't optimized for me to link to them for specific used items.

Viltrox AF 135mm f/1.8 LAB. bigger.
Hint: I just got my Viltrox AF 135mm f/1.8 LAB for Nikon Z, and it's awesome! It also comes for Sony.
For a fraction of the price of the Nikon Z 135mm f/1.8, Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM or Canon RF 135mm f/1.8L, it seems to be equally excellent optically, while adding selectable clicks on its control ring so it's actually useful, adds an LCD display and a metal, rather than crappy plastic, filter thread. I hate plastic filter threads!
Full review coming but if you are curious, Viltrox seems to be outdoing Nikon and Sony at their own game. I'm very happy when third parties start picking up the ball when once-great camera makers start offshoring things and making them out of plastic. (Canon still makes quality products domestically and the Viltrox AF 135mm f/1.8 LAB costs less than the Nikon Z 135mm f/1.8 or Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM.
My Viltrox AF 135mm f/1.8 LAB for Nikon Z is super-sharp right out to the corners at f/1.8, with no lateral chromatic aberration either. I'm impressed!!!
Hint: Try Coupon code KENROCKWELL at checkout possibly for an 8% discount directly from Viltrox. I got mine directly from Viltrox; B&H also has it, as does Adorama and it's also at Amazon.
It's also available for Sony at B&H, for Sony at Adorama, for Sony at Amazon and for Sony directly from Viltrox (remember coupon code KENROCKWELL possibly for the best price direct from Viltrox.)
While you probably can get the best price directly from Viltrox using the KENROCKWELL coupon code, it might ship directly from the factory so I can't vouch for any potential delays or tariffs. Mine showed up right away, but UPS wanted $26.50 from me — still less than the $71.92 (8%) saved with the code, and these things change daily.
Bravo Viltrox!

Vaporware: Canon RF 75-300mm f/4-5.6.
This looks like a repackaging of the bare-bones $199 EF 75-300mm USM III. Both have 58mm filter threads and no stabilization. Boo, but if it's also very inexpensive, lots of people may find it very handy.

Nikon 13mm f/5.6 AI-s.
OLD: Nikon 13mm f/5.6 Serial Number 175,960, now asking $81,459.95 by Boris over eBay.
Boris can's seem to dump this. He tried back in February 2025, asking $73,580.65 and no one bit by PhotoAlps GmbH over eBay.
This is the same sample of lens (Nº 175,960) that was last sold by Houston Camera Exchange over eBay for $50,000 back in December 2023.
PhotoAlps GmbH and Boris and Arsenal all seem to be the very same guy trying to resell this. Obviously it wasn't worth the $78,000 he was asking back in fall of 2024. Since the serial numbers are unique it's easy to track resales, this lens is worth $50,000 at best. Make him and offer if you want it. No Nikon collection is a Nikon Collection without one of these.
I dumped mine a few years ago because it's optically far inferior to much more basic lenses (the Canon RF 10-20mm f/4 L IS STM betters it in at least seven different ways), and I realize there are fewer and fewer old guys left who even know what this is, much less care or remember Nikon's glory days of the 1960s ~ 1980s, as far as collectability goes.
Unlike LEICA, Nikon is not immortal and desire for it doesn't span generations eternally as does LEICA and PORSCHE. Why? Because Nikon hasn't maintained any sort of leadership or luxury aura, and instead these past 30 years has slowly allowed itself to fall back into third place behind Canon and Sony as a provider of offshored consumer electronics (good for photographers but bad for collectors) rather than always staying on the edge with insane halo products like this relic of the 1970s.

Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max in Desert Titanium.
I've been publishing images from my iPhone since the fall, and now you have my summary review. God bless you guys, but does anyone really need an iPhone review? We all have them and love them to death, but since you ask, here you go.
I haven't tried this brand-new 35mm f/1.2, but I did just get my Viltrox AF 135mm f/1.8 for Nikon to test.

Canon EOS R5 and EF 50mm f/1.0 L USM on EF to RF Control-Ring Adapter.
Not only is the R5 at its lowest price ever, the latest firmware now gives it automatic finder brightness control and the ability to save and recall camera settings, so I don't see any reason to pay more for the R5 II!!! (what's new in the R5 II.)
$188 off (open-box with full new warranty): Sony 1.4x Teleconverter: $360.

Please don't expect to find lower prices than we have today. These are the good old days, back upon which we'll look in the future. We'll look back to today when the EOS R6 II still cost only $1,999 and wish we could go back.

Help me help you
I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.
If you find this
as helpful as a book you might have had to buy or a workshop you may
have had to take, feel free to help me continue helping everyone.
If you've gotten your gear through one of my links or helped otherwise, you're family. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks!
If you haven't helped yet, please do, and consider helping me with a gift of $5.00.
The biggest help is when you use any of these links when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. eBay is always a gamble, but all the other places always have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.
Thanks for reading!
Ken
