25% off everything if you use code BFCM25.

These guys print everything from open-flat books to ultraglossy metal prints to canvas to cards to mugs.

Their lay-flat books are incredible; when you open the pages, the photo prints have no "gutter" between the two sides, giving us huge images unlike any other book. They have a special Swiss-made machine that lets them create these.

26 November 2025, WednesdayCanon EOS R5

Canon EOS R5 (one CFexpress and one SD card slot, 25.5 oz./723g with battery and one SD card, $2,599) and EF 50mm f/1.0 L USM on EF to RF Control-Ring Adapter.

The original EOS R5 from 2020 is still among the very best cameras ever made. If you need more than 24 MP, this is the way to go.

I just noticed that it's now selling for $1,300 less than when it came out, and with the latest free firmware, it's much better today than it was back in 2020.

If you're wondering if original EOS R5 is a a good buy today, YES! It's an absolutely state-of-the-art camera at a bargain price. There isn't much significantly new or better in the much more expensive EOS R5 Mark II.

The R5 easily runs at 20 FPS and tracks autofocus and auto exposure just great.

I got my R5 at B&H. I'd also get it at at Adorama, at Amazon or at Crutchfield, or get it used if you know How to Win at eBay, or get it used at KEH:

Body-only: $2,599 at B&H, at Adorama, at Crutchfield and at Amazon, or $2,042 ~ 2,089 used at KEH, or about $1,907 used if you know How to Win at eBay.

R5 & RF 24-105mm f/4L kit: $3,849 at B&H, at Adorama, at Amazon, at B&H and at Crutchfield.

You're welcome, and if you want the newest R5 II for nuttiness like in-camera hand-held focus stacking and compositing (the original R5 easily shoots with focus bracketing, but can't stack and composite them in-camera as the R5 II can), it's also selling today for $300 off its introductory price last year.

30-Day Low Price Guarantee at B&H

I've been buying from B&H for almost 50 years, ever since the mid-to-late 1970s when I was in junior high school.

Among my reasons have always been their 100% cash-back returns policy that lets me try everything in my own environment and not be stuck if I don't love it. I've never had to waste time reading other people's reviews and wondering; if I don't love how it works for me, no worries.

I just learned as I was ordering my Mac Mini on Black Friday sale yesterday that if the price drops any lower in the next 30 days, B&H will credit me back the difference if I ask.

How cool is that? I was wondering of I should have waited to see if it dropped any lower, and learned that I can just order and not worry; if I catch it, B&H will credit me for the lower price.

Be careful, while Adorama and Crutchfield probably offer the same deal (Crutchfield probably for 60 days, I'll check), last I asked, Amazon most emphatically offers no such policy since Amazon tweaks its prices continuously.

We never have to wait to order hoping the price will drop, and maybe missing a lower price. Order it now and love it, and if the price drops, just contact B&H and they'll credit us. Cool!

Postcript: after ordering my Mac Mini yesterday, the price today is $50 more. Maybe it will drop more on Friday; who knows, but if it doesn't, I still got the lowest price 😁. Love those guys!

B&H's Daily Deal Zone

Every day for the next week or so B&H's will be having new Deal Zone deals. Keep checking back here as I'll be getting lists of these and sharing the interesting deals — but you have to catch them each day before they expire at midnight NYC time (9 PM west coast USA).

Loving this Power Bank

Anker 20,000 mAh 87W Power Bank with captive USB-C Cable

Anker A1383 20,000 mAh 87W Power Bank with Captive USB-C Cable. bigger.

My tiny but expensive Nitecore NB20000 is no more, so I just bought one of these 20,000 mAh, 87-watt Anker power banks for my camera bag for half the price on sale. (it was on sale last week back when I wrote about this, but back up to full price as of Monday 17 November 2025).

I'm loving it as it really does pump out 65 watts so my phone or whatever charges super fast when I need it, and it charges at 65 watts as I measure it.

It has a captive USB-C cable so it can charge itself or charge your phone or camera or MacBook Pro without needing any other cables — and it has a USB-C socket and a USB-A socket so you can charge multiple things at 87 watts total.

It also has a real percentage gauge that is amazingly linear and accurate (I measured it) — and it's always on while you're using the power bank. I dislike those crummy 4-LED displays, or percentage readouts that turn off every few minutes.

Get yours while it's still on sale.

Here are the specifications, which are absent pretty much everywhere:

Size: 6.2 × 2.9 × 1.0 inches (157.5 × 73.7 × 25.4 mm), which is thicker, but the same shape and a little smaller when I put my iPhone 17 Pro Max on top of it for comparison.

Weight: 15.115 oz. (428.6g), actual measured weight.

Anker 20,000 mAh 87W Power Bank with captive USB-C Cable

Anker A1383 20,000 mAh 87W Power Bank with Captive USB-C Cable. bigger.

If you want the smallest 20,000 mAh-rated powerbank, I also just got a Nitecore NB20000 Gen3. It is smaller and lighter, but also only a third as powerful (if you need it; few things will actually use all 65W of the Anker A1383 for fast charging).

The Nitecore NB20000 Gen3 has 12% less measured capacity (61.5 Wh versus 69.5 Wh as I measured them) with fewer features for twice the price— but it weighs a third less and is an inch and a half (40mm) shorter than the Anker A1383:

Nitecore NB20000 Gen3

Nitecore NB20000 Gen3. bigger.

The Nitecore NB20000 Gen3 is the Sony RX1 R III of powerbanks: you pay a stiff premium and get fewer features when you need it as small as possible.

The Anker A1383 is a much better product for half the price today, but as a backup to throw in my camera bag, the Nitecore NB20000 Gen3 saves a lot of space — and even my huge Canon EOS R1 only draws 14W to charge.

I'm also loving my iPhone 17 Pro Max. I haven't charged it since overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning, and the battery still isn't dead over two days later today. I'm trying to run it all the way down so I can measure how long and how much energy it takes to charge it from 0% to 100%.

I have measured that my iPhone 17 Pro Max will charge at 40 watts, much more power than last year's iPhone 16 Pro Max which topped out at 32W as I measure it.

$100 off: Nikon Z6 II: $1,647.

$100 off: Nikon Z 40mm f/2 SE: $229.95!

$100 off: Sony A6700 with E 16-50mm OSS II: $1,598.

$100 off: Sony ZV-E10 II: $1,098.

$100 off: Sony ZV-E10 II and E 16-50mm OSS: $1,198.

Canon Camera Privacy Passwords Fiasco

The newest firmware as of late 2025 now requires we set a password to use our cameras, and enter this new password every time we wake up our cameras.

Nooo!

There's an easy way around this: you do have to set a password (mine is 123456), and the next time you turn on your camera, enter the password and tap the DO NOT ASK ME AGAIN option, make sure that there is a check mark next to it, hit OK, and you'll never see it again.

This foolishness is from European privacy paranoia; they're actually concerned that you might have someone's face stored in the Favorite Faces section of the autofocus system, and that some enterprising hacker would go to the trouble of stealing this "personal information" (facial parameters) from your camera instead just pulling it from Facebook - the very name of which implies where people go to harvest facial recognition data along with the names, addresses and travel histories of these people obviously lacking from the data in your camera.

This is only to protect the very sensitive (not) personal information in your camera; it does nothing to deter theft since you always can reset the camera and start from scratch, erasing that precious facial data.

Arrrgh.

This is how you work around it in Canon; I'll assume it's similar in other brands.

More from the Eastern Sierra

I'm loving my iPhone 17 Pro Max.

The best new thing about it is the much higher resolution 48 MP telephoto camera, a world's first in iPhone.

Here's a snap from last month as I edit them:

Vivid Orange and Red Aspens at Crowley Lake in the Eastern Sierra, Fall 2025

Vivid Orange and Red Aspens at Crowley Lake in the Eastern Sierra, 4:23 PM, Tuesday, 21 October 2025. iPhone 17 Pro Max at 8.3× (206mm eq., digitally zoomed from the 48MP, 100mm eq., 16.9mm actual camera) at f/2.8 at 1/237 at Auto ISO 40 (LV 12.2), Radiant Photo software to fire it up a bit. bigger.

I'm impressed: at the 206mm (8.3×) setting the 100mm 4× 48 MP camera is down to 11 MP — and still looks great! No, not as sharp as my EOS R1 enlarged five feet wide, but as seen here, looks marvelous.

What you can't see is that I edited this in my phone; the Clean Up option easily removed a fire hydrant and an old pickup truck out of my image.

OK, since you asked, here's the same shot from my EOS R1:

Vivid Orange and Red Aspens at Crowley Lake in the Eastern Sierra, Fall 2025

Vivid Orange and Red Aspens at Crowley Lake in the Eastern Sierra, 4:29 PM, Tuesday, 21 October 2025. Canon EOS R1, RF 75-300mm at 200mm at f/8 at 1/250 at Auto ISO 100, -0.7 stops exposure compensation (LV 14.0), Radiant Photo and Skylum Luminar Neo software to fire it up. bigger.

I'm also impressed that my $240 ultralight RF 75-300mm works so well. No, it's not as sharp as my EF 100-400mm L IS II USM with its fluorite element, but the RF 75-300mm is small enough to fit in my pocket so I actually have it with me when I need it.

Of course it's a fool's errand to try to compare sharpness here at web sizes (actually an illegal 1,920 pixels wide in both cases 😁), and likewise each has been edited as I see fit artistically to make them look pretty much the same — as I choose to see life. This is art, not some nerd's camera test, and the light was changing so quickly is was definitely not the same for each shot.

$500 off: Canon R5 Mark II: $3,899.

10 November 1775, 250 Years of the USMC!!!

Go Devil Dogs!

A quarter of a millennium; this is quite an anniversary.

Back to our regularly scheduled programing:

$800 off: Nikon Z8: $3,497.

$800 off: Nikon Z8 with Z 24-120mm f/4: $4,397.

$300 off: Nikon Zƒ: $1,897.

While the Z8 deals look like steals, "$800 off" is care of Nikon's brilliant New Math scheme where they raised the catalog prices and immediately offered a deeper discount off these newly raised prices.

The Z8 debuted at $3,997, so today's prices are indeed a solid $500 off, but it's also the same price it was a year ago, and certainly not $800 off of any price that anyone's actually paid. If the FTC is awake, they might want to look into this. It's the same price and marked as "$800 off" at all of B&H, at Adorama, at Amazon and at Crutchfield, so this charade is all coming from Nikon.

Sneaky or not, the Z8 has never sold for less, so with tariffs looming this is certainly a great time to get it (or the R6 II I prefer, for much less), even if as I calculate it's really only $500 off.

My reviews all have price history archived. Here it is for the Z8.

$250 off: Nikon Z5 II: $1,597.

$300 off: Nikon Zƒ with 40mm f/2 SE: $2,137.

$250 off: Nikon Z5 II with Z 24-200mm VR: $2,397 (my very favorite Nikon FX combo; I am not a fan of the Z6, Z7 or Z8 series due to their inferior controls. I'd much rather be shooting Nikon with a Z5 II and Z 24-200mm VR).

$300 off: Nikon Zƒ with 24-70mm f/4: $2,497.

$600 off: Nikon Z 14-24mm f/2.8: $2,097.

$300 off: Nikon Z 14-30mm f/4: $1,097 (my favorite Nikon ultrawide).

$450 off: Nikon Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR: $2,497.

$400 off: Nikon Z 135mm f/1.8: $2,197 (compare to the Viltrox Z 135mm f/1.8 for just $899; try discount code KENROCKWELL for an even deeper discount).

iPhone 17 Pro Max Workflows

I'm sorting through my fall color shots from last week.

This year I'm enjoying a new kind of workflow on my iPhone 17 Pro Max, which should apply to most modern iPhones.

I shoot in the default Most Efficient file type because it's the smallest file size and adds HDR capture, and if looking at your photos on iPhone, adds brilliant HDR display as well for brilliant bright colors and highlights. "Most Efficient" is Apple's plain English name for HEIF, and is set in your iPhone at Settings > Camera > App Settings > Formats > Camera Capture > High Efficiency.

My 2021 copy of Photoshop can't handle HEIF, so I still transfer from iPhone to my Mac via AirDrop, and have my iPhone convert every shot into JPG as it's transferred by selecting the photos to transfer, hitting the SHARE icon, hitting the Options option at the top and selecting Format > Most Compatible. "Most Compatible" is Apple's plain English name for JPG.

This way my iPhone shoots and saves all my photos in the the very efficient (small file size) HEIF format with HDR, and does all the conversions to JPG to send them to my Mac for editing and storage. The HEIFs stay on my iPhone if I ever need them, and my Mac's system has the handy and universal JPGs. I've done it this way for years.

I prefer to shoot everything with the Amber Style preset, which emphasizes warm colors. I set this in my iPhone at Settings > Camera > App Settings > Photographic Styles > Amber. The Amber Style preset looks awesome for FALL COLOR, as well as for everything else like people and places. The Gold Style preset also works great for FALL COLOR.

This year I started playing with Adjustments in the iPhone's native Photos app. Just look at a photo, tap the three sliders icon at the bottom center right, and you're in.

Once there, the Styles option (bottom left) lets us change the Photographic Styles setting after you took the picture!!! I shoot everything in Amber Style, and if you want to see if you prefer a different one after you shot it, it's trivial to preview and change it.

Exposure, highlights, shadows, color and more are at the Adjust option at the bottom after you tap the three slider icon. There's also a slider for adding or removing vignetting, which I love for adding emphasis.

Under Crop after hitting the three sliders icon you also can correct for camera tilt and correct perspective, just like with a view camera!

If you want to apply the same corrections to other shots, hit the three dots icon and select Copy Edits. Select other images, tap the three dots icon and select Paste Edits. Easy!

Hit the Clean Up icon on the bottom right after you tap the three sliders icon, and you can remove power lines, cars and other distractions. You can do this manually by tracing a finger along whatever has to go, and often the iPhone itself is so smart that it will highlight what it thinks you'll want to remove. If so, just one tap of what the iPhone has highlighted will remove it.

With any of these edits you always can revert to the original by tapping the three sliders icon and then selecting Revert at the top right. If you prefer to save different edits or versions, simply make duplicates (with one or more photos selected, tap the three dots in the top center right and select Duplicate) and work on those. Easy!

Here's where it gets cool: after an exhausting shoot, I can lie on my sofa and tweak my images to my heart's content, easy-peasy on my iPhone, and when done, I'll transfer them to my Mac with most of the color and other corrections already done! Most iPhone photos are perfect, but on occasion I'll want warmer colors or my signature insane levels of color saturation.

I love Skylum Luminar Neo for removing distractions and adding vignetting, and the iPhone now makes this even faster before I get to my Mac, often eliminating the need for Neo for some things. Neo does amazing things, and it's also so powerful it can take longer to chew on all the data.

No Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, LEICA or OM SYSTEM camera can do all this in-camera, and even if one tried, their tiny, dim screens would make it nearly impossible. No computer is needed; I tweak the basics of all my iPhone shots in the phone before I transfer them to my Mac for more detailed editing. The iPhone's magnificently sharp and color-accurate screen make this all very precise and perfect.

As I'm selecting my photos in Photo Mechanic on my Mac, when I see a wire I need to remove or want a slightly different color rendition, it's very easy to pick up my phone, make the changes and AirDrop a JPG back to my Mac. I like easy, and Apple's adjustments are first rate and all working from the original HEIF file as layers; we're not losing anything each time we go in to make changes since the final "baked" result isn't created until we export the image from the iPhone. Brilliant!

These adjustments are why some bother with raw files. Not me! I can do all this with HEIFs on my phone much more pleasantly on my couch than on a Mac at my desk and avoid the file bloat of raw files. Of course the iPhone has so much dedicated image processing power that all these adjustments are instantaneous.

Some of these after-the-fact editing options aren't available if you have your phone save images as JPGs (Settings > Camera > App Settings > Formats > Camera Capture > Most Compatible. "Most Compatible" is Apple's plain English name for JPG).

I have not bothered with Apple's raw files, which I'll assume offers the same options, if not more, as HEIF.

This process gives new meaning to "camera original," as we say in Hollywood, or "Straight out of the Camera" or "Direct from Camera" or "Unedited," since the camera, an iPhone, is so complete that it allows intricate editing which results different versions coming from the camera! Bravo, Apple!

Here are two samples, each shot at 48 Megapixels. I leave my iPhone set to 24MP for general use (Settings > Camera > Formats > Photo Capture > Photo Mode > 24 MP), and if I come across an occasional show-off shot I'll bump it up to 48 MP by tapping the HEIC24 option at the top left of the Camera app's shooting screen (when held vertically; its on the button left when held horizontally) and select the RESOLUTION 48MP option:

AirPods Pro 3: 25 hours of play time on a system charge!

Apple AirPods Pro 3

AirPods Pro 3.

I finally played my AirPods Pro 3 long enough to see how long a full charge of the case and pods would play:

25 Hours!

A full charge of the pods themselves plays for 8.65 hours, and when you keep recharging the pods from the larger battery in the case as needed, the total play time for a full charge of everything gives me 25 hours of play time until the pods and case are all at 1% and shut off.

Plug into USB-C (or drop them on a wireless charger) and all three devices (case, left and right pods) are all charged up in about an hour together.

So long as you charge the system every night, there's no way you'll run out of power so long as you pull the pods out of your ears every 8 hours or sooner to recharge them in the case.

Popped back in their case, my pods charge to 39% in 10 minutes, 50% in 20 minutes, 69% in a half hour or 82% in an hour. Just pop then in the case when you take a break and you're good.

Charge your case every night or two if you're a heavy user, or if you don't live with pods in your ears 24/7, you probably can charge the case every few months and be good (I'll let you know).

Even my sloppy Tozo Golden pods hold a charge for over a year if I don't use them, and while AirPods Pro 3 do a lot more (like have Find My), I suspect casual users can pop these in a backpack and they'll always be ready months later.

Their controls and integration into the Apple ecosystem are superb as expected. It's trivially automatic to pair them to your iPhone, and then they're already paired to everything else (iPad, Mac, Apple TV, etc.) connected to the same Apple ID. They're easy to wear all day, automatically turning down the music and opening up the isolation so you can hear people when you talk to them.

Of course they sound great, with the strongest noise isolation I've ever heard. AirPods Pro 3 have flawless tight, deep and articulate bass with a tonal balance that's designed to be clear, open and airy.

Better, they seem to incorporate excellent loudness (bass) compensation at softer levels, so the bass stays strong even played softly. You don't have to play them loud as you do with almost every headphone or speaker to hear all the bass; the AirPods Pro 3 automatically compensate for our ears' natural loss of bass sensitivity at lower levels.

The most amazing thing about the sound isn't just how the sound gets out of your head with simple stereo. Many people might not notice, but these are brilliant multichannel pods! Especially if you run the fast calibration that looks at the shape of your head and ears, with the right sources the AirPods Pro 3 will throw sounds wherever they're supposed to go left/right, forward and back and even up and down!

Fed from a multichannel source like Apple Music Spatial Audio or a 5.1 or Dolby Atmos movie, sounds come from all over a huge 360º soundspace. It's humbling how these pods sound just like my fancy home motion picture theatre, with 400 pounds of front speakers, multiple subwoofers and discrete rear speakers. With my pods on, I have a really hard time trying to figure out if my discrete multichannel speakers are playing, or just the pods. (Hint: cover your ears. If the sound is unchanged, just the pods are playing.)

It astonishes how well they do multichannel audio (Spatial, Atmos, 5.1, etc.), and no one else seems to notice. They are extraordinary for movies, which for 50 years have been released in multichannel (Dolby Stereo, DTS, SDDS, 5.1, etc.). Not much music even today is streamed in multichannel yet, but movies are, and the sound comes from 360º from almost every even older movie when streamed today (at least with my AirPods coupled to my Apple TV or iOS device).

Full review coming; these are my first observations. They sound great: unforgivingly accurate with rough recordings and smooth and detailed with great recordings, and amazing in their multichannel ability to put up a HUGE soundstage with sounds coming from behind and above us, far superior to any commercial movie theater I've ever heard.

Probably more important for normal people are also all the magnificent Apple features completely absent on other brands of pods, and yes, they stay stuck in my ears all day, especially if you remember to select the correctly sized (included) seals for your particular ears.

Bravo!

$224 off (scratch & dent with full new warranty): Canon R6 Mk II: $2,075.

$112 off (scratch & dent with full new warranty): Canon RP: $1,037.

I loved the RP when it came out, however the new version of the RP is the greatly improved R8. They have the same bodies (just look at my pictures of them in my reviews), while the R8 has many, many improvements over the old RP.

Honestly, while any of the RP, R8 and R6 II take the same great pictures, the R8 and RP are in such tiny bodies that they are short a couple of buttons and dials that simply won't fit, and if you're serious enough to be reading this page, the R6 II is far more convenient for actual shooting because it has all the knobs and dials we need without having to revert to menus for many things as the RP and R8 force us to do. Also the RP and R8 finders are dim in daylight, while the R6 II is magnificent.

I'm Back!!!

Our Fall Eastern Sierra trip was a blast, with some of the best sights since 2019. Photos coming when I can dig out.

For now, here's what's new this past week:

NEU: LEICA M EV1.

The M EV1 is the first LEICA or LEICA M with an electronic finder.

For the first time in over one hundred years of LEICA photography, we finally can see exactly what will be in our picture through a viewfinder! Optical finders and reflex Visoflex catastrophes were more suited to disposable cameras, never anything digital.

Optical finders have been obsolete since film. It's about time that LEICA, the inventor of the mirrorless camera in 1918, finally made a mirrorless camera., which now obsoletes everything else they've done this past 107 years.

This is an Instrument of the Immortals, so of course there is no autofocus. I have no idea why there is an LCD on the back. Of course the M EV1 has no optical rangefinder, which also went obsolete once the world went digital. Optical finders were barely good enough for film, but needed constant calibration and worked poorly with long or very fast lenses if you wanted perfect focus.

Auf Wiedersehen, hundert Jahre optische LEICA und LEICA M, ein Hoch auf die neue M!

NEW: Laowa AF 200mm f/2 for Sony: $1,997!

Here's what used to cost $6,000 from the camera brands, for $1,997.

Even better, you can't even buy a new 200mm f/2 from Canon, Nikon or Sony today. Nikon and Canon discontinued them, and Sony has never made any. The only camera-brand 200mm f/2 sold new today is from Fuji, but it only covers APS-C and costs $6,000.

A 200mm f/2 is the go-to lens for indoor sports like volleyball and gymnastics, and for indoor and night concerts.

The world's first 200mm f/2, the manual focus AI 200mm f/2 ED-IF from 1977, still sells used for $2,000 due to its superb bokeh.

Notes from the Field

iPhone 17 Pro Max

Loving it; its new telephoto camera is a huge improvement over everything else that came before. Yes. I'll be sharing what I shot this weekend.

EOS R1

I just added my High ISO Performance section to my EOS R1 Review.

Also loving my EOS R1. Last weekend I marveled at its world's best autofocus with which all I got were perfectly-focused 19 FPS sequences of action shots, even with my bargain-basement pokey-AF RF 75-300mm lens ($239!).

No buffering, no choking and I didn't even have to assign focus points. Simply set to All-Area AF and SERVO AF my R1 magically found the correct part of the subject, grabbed focus and never let go. It's a huge step up from anything from Nikon; my Z8 and Z9 and nothing from Nikon can find the subject automatically and get every shot in focus as they move around anywhere near as well as pretty much any of my Canons.

I pity the Nikon shooters who have to suffer through an "acceptable" percentage of out-of-focus action shots. Man, you really need to go shoot all these cameras as I do to see the real differences; marketing claims have nothing to do with real-world performance. Even my R10 just puts those little blue boxes over surfer heads 400 feet away like it's easy, and then just keeps them in focus. As I say in my R10 review, it has better action autofocus than my Z9! Bravo! (Aren't you glad I'm not on the take from any of the camera companies so I can just say it like it is? I sure am!)

This weekend I finally found the FOCUS STACKING mode, and oh la la, it lets me get limitless depth-of-field hand held, and even with my ancient EF 28-135mm IS (1998-2016) on my EF to RF adapter. I can snap away handheld and get perfectly composited and focus stacked results, completely created in-camera. Without this in-camera feature I could never get everything in focus for automotive interior shots unless I resorted to time wasted in a computer later; my R1 saves salable complete, composited images right onto my card — and it does it fast!

The R1 does hand-held Focus Stacking, and it composites the final images in-camera in just a second to deliver completely in-focus images just walking around and tapping the shutter button - no computer or raw files needed! BRAVO! Some brands still can't create focus-stacked composites in camera, and I have no time for computer piddling when I need saleable images right out of my cameras.

You don't need a R1 for this, check my reviews because many other newer Canons do the same thing. Beware older models like the RP and R5, which can shoot a focus-stacked sequence but have no ability to composite them into a complete image in-camera. The new version of the RP, the R8, does this in-camera, as well as the R5 II and R6 II. The R7, R10 and even the little R50 do all this in-camera as well! Bravo!

Regular Photo (one frame of a hand-held automated sequence)

Only the prancing horse logo on the steering wheel is in focus. The dashboard, floor mats, seats and center console are completely out of focus:

Automatic In-Camera Composited Image

To do this all in one press of the shutter button, set MENU > Camera Page 5 > Focus Bracketing > Enable. I leave Number of Shots at its default of 100 and Focus Increment at its default of 4. I Enable Depth Composite so that multiple bracketed images are individually aligned because they were hand-held and then assembled into one completely in-focus image. Set this, and then one press of the shutter shoots a sequence, saves the source images, and in about a second, aligns and composites everything into one image as shown below.

Since I'm hand-holding, I Enable Crop depth comp. so that there are no black borders from natural hand motion not covering the same parts of the subject in every frame. Set all this, and voilà, we get a marvelously detailed, automatically stacked image in about one-second:

Our eyes work the same way. While we look all over anything like the the cockpit of a Ferrari, our eyes continuously adjust focus as we look around. Our brains composite all these glances into the one broad perception we have of the complete cockpit.

Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max Sample Image Sunrise

Dawn, San Diego, California, 7:18 AM, Thursday 09 October 2025. iPhone 17 Pro Max 1× (24mm eq.) camera at f/1.8 at 1/6,711 (LV 14.4), spiced up a little and added some deliberate vignetting in Skylum Luminar Neo software. bigger.

As expected, my iPhone 17 Pro Max is a winner. What's new is far superior telephoto capabilities over the old iPhone 16 Pro Max, with a 48 MP telephoto sensor replacing the 12 MP telephoto sensor of the old iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Canon EOS R1 ROCKS for sports - even with the Canon RF 70-300mm!

Canon EOS R1 and RF 75-300mm Sample Image

Dawn Patrol, Pacific Beach Pier, San Diego, California, 9:50 AM, Saturday, 04 October 2025. Slight crop from Canon EOS R1, RF 70-300mm at 300mm wide-open at f/5.6 at 1/2,000 at Auto ISO 200 (LV 15.0), Radiant Photo software to add light and Skylum Luminar Neo software to add deliberate vignetting. bigger or camera-original 6.5 MB © 24 MP JPG file.

I'm impressed! This bottom dollar lens is actually very sharp, and while it has a slow 1980s-era mechanical focus motor, on my Canon EOS R1 gives amazing results shooting sports and action when the motion is relatively constant and linear.

The R1's AF system is impeccable. It automatically finds the subject, locks-on and never gives up. I got thousands of sharp, colorful images in just a few hours of shooting one morning as you see above. I was astonished, the R1 tracks magnificently and I can't recall any out-of focus images out of thousands!

Help me help you

I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.

If you find this as helpful as a book you might have had to buy or a workshop you may have had to take, feel free to help me continue helping everyone.

If you've gotten your gear through one of my links or helped otherwise, you're family. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks!

If you haven't helped yet, please do, and consider helping me with a gift of $5.00.

The biggest help is when you use any of these links when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. eBay is always a gamble, but all the other places always have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.

Thanks for reading!
