Hint: 18-way seats are an uncommon option, even on higher-end cars, and are wildly more comfortable and adjustable than the 14-way or lesser seats. The way to tell that you have 18-way seats is to look for the three matching rocker switches above, which is easy to see in in online listings.

I love this little SUV that I brought home in May 2024. It's a blast to drive and very practical and economical as fancy cars go. Yes, even this base model has all-wheel drive. There are driveshafts going to every wheel, even if there is no "4" in the model name, and it even has an Offroad mode.

This little 4-cylinder gem is more nimble and fun to drive than my 2018 P971 Panamera Turbo or 2007 Cayenne Turbo S because in the real world of potholes, speed limits, uneven pavement, traffic and speed bumps, this base-model Macan has enough tire sidewall height and ground clearance not to get damaged in daily, practical driving, and its instantly responsive PDK transmission gives instant power whenever I hit it, unlike the Cayenne Turbo S which has so much turbo lag and a slow-shifting conventional automatic transmission that its huge V8 doesn't provide any power until after you need it. This base Macan is always a hoot to drive, and can carry prodigious amounts of people or fine art that a sedan can't:

2020 Porsche Macan Art Pickup

I can fit at least eight lavishly framed paintings in the back of my Porsche Macan, Las Vegas, Nevada, 7:59 AM, Friday, 28 March 2025. bigger.

My Macan has Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and heavenly 18-way seats, so it's much more luxurious to drive than either my 2018 P971 Panamera Turbo or 2007 Cayenne Turbo S which lack these options. Six-hour drive? Easy!

The 4-cylnder turbo engine has more power and torque than the V8 plant of the extraordinary 928 and 928S that turned the world on its side — and the Macan responds instantly with its PDK (double-clutch Formula-1 bred Porsche DoppelKupplungsgetriebe) transmission. Go ahead and get the V6 Macan S, GTS or Turbo if you insist, but this base model has loads of power and actually gets 29 MPG on interstate freeway trips.

Our 2018 P971 Panamera Turbo and LEMON Mercedes S580 had to be retired because their ultra-low profile 30 and 35-series tires were constantly having sidewall failures (bubbles) from potholes in the unmaintained roads where we live. This Macan, even with its exotic 21" Sport Classic Wheels and 35 and 40-series tires, hasn't had any tire problems — and easily goes through my local car wash so I don't have to pay for a detailer every week as I did with the other two. It's all about having a taller sidewall than the depth of the potholes.

The Macan is agile, precise and sure-footed, like a really great lightweight competition mountain bike. It has a 39-foot turning circle.

It's a small car; I easily can see over the top: it's only 63.9" (1,621 mm) tall. I shoot all my photos from ground level, but rest assured it's easy for me to see over when I stand next to it.

It's a 2020 model, which I prefer to the newest design because my 2020 model has real switches for all its controls rather than the shiny black void of nothingness similar to my Typ 971 Panamera Turbo. While the newer style may look cool at a distance, real buttons with real clicks work and feel much better compared to the wishy-washy fake electronic clicks and blank plastic of newer styles.

I also love the real, legible gauges with vivid red needles I can read out of the corner of my eyes while driving rather than the anonymous white needles of the newer models. I'll also be honest that a real needle looks and reads much more clearly and faster than any LCD imitations as common today in my BMW 850i Convertible, X5M Competition and, yes my Typ 971 Panamera Turbo. You can't beat the legibility of a red needle on black, with white markings.

You can get the Porsche Macan at eBay if you know How to Win at eBay.

All Macans are different.

Three major things I love on my Macan are:

1.) 18-way seats are one of the best things about this Macan, and were only an $380 additional charge when new. I never realized that my $185,000 Panamera Turbo only had the crappy 14-way seats until I sat in my Macan's glorious thrones! 18-way seats are rare, but easy to identify: just look for all the extra seat controls.

2.) Adaptive Cruise Control automatically varies your speed to match the car in front of you, a huge relief in real-world driving. The old-style (non-Adaptive) cruise controls only work well if you live where there's no one else on the road. You can identify this feature by the small shiny black dome which is a RADAR antenna in the grill several inches below the Porsche crest on the hood, and by the DIST (following distance) control on the lower left cruise control stalk. For just $1,170, it's the best grand I've ever spent as Porsche options go.

3.) Leather Package in Black is also well worth the $1,740 as Porsche options go (unlike the ludicrous $5,260 vanity 21"wheel option). This leather option covers the dashboard and side and center arm rests with fine Corinthian leather and makes this interior feel like those in my six-figure price tag cars:

Good       intro       top

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com This is an agile little car; as SUVs go it's very low to the ground so it doesn't wobble all over, but still has loads of ground clearance so it never scrapes on driveways as a sports car will.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Smooth and nimble, tight and precise handling.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com It does everything well. It's extremely comfortable, handles like a dream and carries a ton of people and cargo.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Great ergonomics; everything is well thought out and easy to use. Once you've suffered with a poorly designed car like my Mercedes S580 you'll appreciate how much better an ergonomically well-designed car is to operate.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com The 18-way seats are heaven. We all have different butts, but for mine it's not that everything is adjustable as much as the 18-way seats have huge adjustable side bolsters to hold me tight. The bottom and back side bolsters are air cushions, filled with an air pump as you adjust them with the switches. I have no problem driving over five hours non-stop to or from Vegas in comfort; I want to get up and walk around, but it's like sitting on a very supportive cloud. Bravo!

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com The opulent Leather Package interior option makes this feel like cars with double the price tag, with leather all over the center console, door arm rests and dashboard.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Turbo 4-zyl engine has as much power as regular V8s used to have. There's no need for the V6 Macan S or more unless you're still thinking in the pre-turbo world where engines put out half the power they do today. Remember the astounding Porsche 928 and 928S of 1978-1984 immortalized in Risky Business, Weird Science and Scarface? Its V8 had less power (219 hp in the 928 or 242 hp in the 928S) than this turbo 4! Al Pacino refers to the 928 as a "Tiger," which is what "Macan" means!

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Turbo 4-zyl engine is good on gas, too. Typical freeway MPG:

Porsche Macan Freeway MPG

Porsche Macan Typical Freeway Miles per Gallon. bigger.

I have no problem getting 29 MPG on 5-hour freeway trips at 75 MPH, along with traffic.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Smooth engine and smooth at idle; much smoother than Mercedes' chuggy 4-zylinder engines.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Little to no engine sound while at a constant speed.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com The engine hums smoothly at full power rather than buzz or sound raspy.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com The PDK double-clutch transmission is magic. While everyone knows it shifts instantly, what makes it magic is that it’s so well programmed that you can’t feel it shift! It's like driving a Tesla; you can't hear or feel a thing as it shifts up and down.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com The PDK shifts into neutral and idles while coasting, and magically revs back up as you tap the gas to get back in gear seamlessly. The computer syncs engine revs with up and downshifts so it's all brilliantly seamless.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com It will instantly downshift as many gears as needed to when you hit it, and for normal driving it's quiet and docile parking and maneuvering at slow speeds.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Wireless CarPlay.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) rocks; it works brilliantly in traffic with all its RADARs and cameras.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com So long as you're moving, you can engage the ACC at any speed. Engage it while rolling at less than 20 MPH and it will set 20 MPH.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Smart automatic windshield wipers don't wipe the window if it's dry and you left the lever in the INTermittent position from yesterday. (Other cars will wipe once across a dry windshield when you restart their engines the next day).

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Compact spare tire in the trunk; none of this run-flat nonsense of my BMWs or the can of fix-a-flat that comes with my Mercedes.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Much better interior quality than in my LEMON Mercedes S580: the Macan has metal interior door pulls and shift paddles, while they're crappy silver-painted plastic in my S580 for twice the price. The Macan's alloy shift paddles and door handles are well finished with no seams; smooth all around.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com While everyone was afraid that the rear seats were tiny, this tiny SUV still has plenty of room for four six-footers. (There are three rear seats but I haven't tried stuffing five adults in.)

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Glass roof is wonderful when you're sitting in the back:

Ryan driving the Porsche Macan

View from the back seat of Ryan driving the Porsche Macan, 4:12 PM, Saturday, 25 May 2024. Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max 0.5× (2.2 mm actual, 14mm equivalent) camera at f/2.2 at 1/561 at Auto ISO 50 (LV 12.4), Photoshop CC 2021 with Radiant Photo plugin. bigger.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Its headlights have automatic cornering lights that turn on as needed, and the main beams automatically steer themselves as you turn the wheel.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Automatic high beams also work great.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Big cup holders; huge for a German-made car. (Just normal sized for US-market cars.)

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com MADE IN LEIPZIG, GERMANY. This isn't some Pseudo-German SUV actually made by Mercedes in Alabama or by BMW in South Carolina.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Excellent Forward Visibility. Thinner-than-usual windshield pillars (A-pillars) and extra glass (rather than a black area) near the outside mirrors leads to much better forward visibility due to much smaller blind zones than most cars. This is a huge help seeing cars or pedestrians approaching you from the left at an intersection:

2020 Porsche Macan

Narrow A-pillar and a bonus tiny window ahead of the side mirror gives much better forward visibility than most other cars (other cars usually have a black panel ahead of the mirror rather than more glass). Porsche Macan, Saturday, 4:27 PM, 01 June 2024. bigger.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com If the motorized rear hatch hits something and stops, it's much easier than other cars to lift it back open manually.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com HD FM radio reception much more sensitive than the HD radios in my other cars. In locations where my favorite stations were too weak for good reception, they come in uninterrupted in my Macan.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Big, legible clock with big red hands in the center of the dashboard:

2020 Porsche Macan Clock

Porsche Macan Clock. bigger.

The minute and second hands move in full minutes or seconds; the minute hand jumps a full minute each time rather than moving continuously. As seen above, the minute hand stays on the minute at 8:12 rather than being halfway to 8:13.

Hint: Avoid the foolish Sport Chrono package as I had on my Panamera Turbo because it replaces this great clock with a useless one-handed version! Likewise avoid the 2022 and newer models as they turned the red gauge needles and clock hands to white, which don't stand out against the black face and white letters as God and Dr. Porsche intended.

Bad       intro       top

Not much; here are the worst things about my Macan:

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com Wider-than-usual B-pillars (between front and rear seats) lead to a big blind spot around your 7-to-9 o'clock position as you turn your head to try check behind to your left. If you have the entire back filled with cargo, these fat pillars can make it even more difficult to see what's to your sides as you're driving without being able to see out the back.

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com The sun visors are relatively narrow and don't pull-out (extend) from their pivoted ends, so you can't pull them back towards you when they're pulled to the side windows. Unless you're short you most likely won't be able to keep the sun out of your eyes heading north late in the afternoon or south early in the morning. I'm 6 feet (183 cm) tall and there's a large area to my immediate left that I can't block with the visor when I need it.

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com The integrated garage-door opener controls have to be held down for a second to work; you can't just tap them.

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com Oddly the clock doesn't always sync to GPS or even keep the same time each time the Macan is started, even though I have the Sync to GPS option clicked. Most other modern cars are always correct, while every so often I'll notice the clock is a minute or two slow.

yellow ball icon © KenRockwell.com The interior lights are cool dim LEDs, which is typical in most cars today. It's hard to see what's going on inside at night with just the few little LED lights; I'd prefer that they were much brighter and warmer, especially with a black interior.

yellow ball icon © KenRockwell.com I see this as simply normal for a fastback (sloped-rear) car, but some magazine writers who don't actually own this car as I do complain that the rear visibility is limited — duh. Hey, when you're from New York and drive a Porsche, whatever's going on behind you doesn't matter — it's history. I've never had a problem; it has rear-looking Doppler RADAR to warn you if you're about to change lanes into someone.

Missing       intro       top

Of course this will vary depending on what you order, and some of these features may not be available on any Macan, but on my Macan there's:

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No massage seats.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com Heated and cooled seats, but no center console or door arm rest or steering wheel heaters.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No cooled or heated cup holders as we have on my BMW X5M Competition.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No kick-the-bumper-to-open-the-rear-hatch feature as on my my BMW X5M Competition, BMW M850i Convertible and LEMON Mercedes S580.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No wireless phone charging. So? My other cars that have this feature don't charge well, and make my iPhone very hot. Generic wireless chargers don't charge very well even if you do have them.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No full screen CarPlay; CarPlay only fills about half the screen at best (1,120 x 640 pixels). I guess Porsche drivers are too cool for CarPlay, but at least the basic car controls on the left of the screen are always available. (Our Panamera Turbo Typ 971 is the same.)

The 4.67 final drive, standard on the GTS, would change the calculation to 712.5 tire revs/mile × 4.67 final drive × 0.52 top gear = 1,730 RPM at 60 MPH, so I'm going with a 4:67:1 final drive. I'll betcha this secretly came along with the 21" sport wheel & tire option.

6.3 s 0-60 MPH.

16.3 s 0-160 kmph (99.4 MPH)

The turbo 4-zyl engine has more than enough power for responsible driving. It has twice the power of a typical, non-turbo, economy car engine (248 hp versus 124 hp), and has more power than the V8 of the astonishing Porsche 928 and 928S of 1978-1984 immortalized in Risky Business,  Weird Science and Scarface, which only had 219 hp in the 928 or 242 hp in the 928S.

It's good on gas, responsive and has no turbo lag, unlike the huge lag in my Cayenne Turbo S.

It has plenty of power at semi-legal speeds. I have no problem hitting 80+ MPH by the end of a freeway on-ramp or passing people at any freeway speed. It pulls strongly in first, second and third gears, however once it upshifts to fourth at 87 MPH it no longer has the oomph we still get from a 500+ hp V8 at triple-digit speeds. If you really need to pull hard above 87 MPH go ahead and get a more powerful model, but you'll always be paying for this extra power in gas, tires, oil, brakes and service even if you never use it.

That this basic Macan has just the right amount of power today (double that of a normal car), and doesn't eat through tires, brakes and gasoline like the overpowered cars pimped by car magazines and commercial websites that are funded by advertising from car companies. Those sources aren't your friends; they're in the pockets of the auto makers and almost always encourage us to pay more for the bigger engine which makes a lot more money for the car companies that pay them for advertising. It's one big circle game today now that turbos make everything fast.

It's not like 20 years ago when the base models of many cars could be underpowered; today the base Macan has plenty of power. In fact, it's 0-60 time is the same as my V8 1997 Mercedes SL500 which was among the world's most powerful cars when it came out, and also the same as my V8 2002 Mercedes E430, which these same magazines described as "an executive rocket ship" when it came out.

Honestly, when you convert from the gross horsepower ratings used before 1973 to the net ratings used today, this little 4-zylinder engine has about the same power output as the 455 CID V8 in my 1970 GTO! It has almost as much power as the first V12s had in the late 1990s! Cars have become wildly more powerful in recent years; there's no need for V8s or even V6s for actual driving.

Having owned quite a few 500+ hp turbo V8 cars (Cayenne Turbo S, Typ 971 Panamera Turbo, BMW 850i Convertible, a 617 hp BMW X5M Competition and I forget what else), I'll admit that I feel really foolish having paid so much for buying and operating such stupidly powerful cars when I realize that, except for when I first played with them, you never can get your foot to the floor in real-world driving because these super cars are already going faster than you want before your foot ever gets to that floor!

This basic Macan is perfect because you actually can get your foot on the floor now and then passing on the freeway, so I don't feel like I got oversold on power. A turbo 4 is plenty today, a turbo 6 is more than enough and a turbo V8 is waaaaaaay more than enough.

All decent cars have way more than enough power today; it's crazy how some old-time hot-rodders like me (my first car out of college was a 1970 GTO convertible with a 455 CID HO V8 and a 4-speed) still think we need V8s.

Rear Cargo Dimensions

Width

41" wide (minimum) at the floor (perfect for art that's 41" wide, while some parts of the bed are 42" wide), 40" wide at the height of the pivoting shelf, and 41" wide at the top of the rear hatch.

47" diagonally across the rear hatch opening. This is good to know as it's how you fit flat artwork that's more than 41" tall.

Depth

35 ~ 37.5" deep at the floor with the rear seats up as shown below.

66 ~ 70" deep with the rear seats folded forwards. It's 59" deep at the height of the pivoting tray with the rear seats folded forwards. This is less than at floor level because the front seats angle backwards, and this is with the front seats in a normal position.

77" deep with the rear seats folded forwards and the front passenger seat pushed all the way forwards. Assuming the driver's seat is in a driveable posuton, then you have about 31" width at this depth between the right edge of the drivers seat and the right wall of the passenger's side, for instance, this would carry a 6-foot ladder.

Height

28 ~ 28¾" tall at the rear hatch opening, with the pivoting tray removed.

The range of measurements are because it's smaller at the sides than in the center of the cargo bay

It has a three-way folding split rear seat:

2020 Porsche Macan

bigger.

The cargo area is mostly rectangular, not wasting space with little carve-outs, so it's more useful than its 17.6 ft3 seats up and under the flipping cover as shown below, or 52.9 ft3 with the rear seats down and filled to the ceiling ratings imply.

USB-C Charging

The USB-C charge outlets are basic.

I measure only 4.4V at 2.53A = 11¼ watts from the single front outlet. (Two more are in back).

See Recommendations to get faster, higher-power charging.

Crazy Cold-Air Intake System

2020 Porsche Macan

Cold outside air enters the hollow 2-layer hood just above the center of the black plastic grille (note the big rectangular gasket under the hood shown at the top center of this photo), travels through the hollow hood and exits from the two small holes seen on the bottom left of the hood in this photo into the larger intake in the engine bay seen to the left of the engine! You can hear some breathing from inside the hood at about 1,800 RPM when you give it just a little more throttle than regular cruising and the engine has to work a little more.

Versus the Cayenne

The Cayenne is a larger car designed more for room and comfort than for sport and agility. The Cayenne is longer, wider and taller.

The Cayenne has a traditional torque-converter automatic transmission like a Buick, not the PDK (double-clutch Formula-1 bred Porsche DoppelKupplungsgetriebe) transmission of the Macan and 911s. To me this is a huge difference; it's much more fun to drive a PDK than an automatic.

I had a 2007 Cayenne Turbo S. This Macan is much better because it has none of the turbo lag and slow downshifting that plagued the Cayenne Turbo S; this Macan is much more drivable. The Cayenne Turbo S was difficult to drive because its extraordinary power never came on until after you needed it and were trying to slow down. The Cayenne Turbo S was great in track tests, but awful to drive on real roads.

This is as of iOS 18 in 2025, and has been this way for years.

You can't touch and drag icons and apps on your car's screen, instead oddly you have to rearrange them in your iPhone.

In your iPhone go to Settings > General > CarPlay > (select your car) > Customize!

With more than one car you can (and have to) set them separately for each car.

It's weird because you're moving them up and down a one-dimensional list on your phone which doesn't correlate to the two dimensions of your CarPlay Screen, but this will still amaze your friends when you show them how they can customize their CarPlay screens, too.

Key Fob Battery Replacement: CR2032     users guide     top

Here's how to change the key battery as of 2025. (Older models may have keys like this instead.)

From the bottom, slide the catch towards you:

This unlocks the sliding metal emergency key so you can slide it out. Use a thumbnail in the crack to the left of the release to separate it (the sliding part is not connected to the key ring so pulling it won't help):

Now use the sliding metal emergency key as handle to lift off the battery cover:

Pull off the cover:

And now turn over the key so the battery pops out, and replace it with another CR2032 cell. Reverse the procedure (press the cover back on and slide the key back in) and you're done.

Hint: It takes one CR2032 lithium cell. You can get them at the grocery store checkout for $10 each, or just order them from Amazon in advance for about $1 each so you'll have them when you need them. I think they last about 6 months each.

Even if you don't order them in advance, you ought to have them in a day or two and there is usually plenty warning when you see LOW KEY BATTERY displayed on your dashboard.

No worries, if your key battery ever dies completely, you can use just the emergency key:

Emergency Key     users guide     top

If the remote or keyless entry won't unlock your door, take out the metal emergency key as I just showed above.

Pull-out the driver's side door handle and look carefully for a little plastic plug which protects the one traditional keyhole that hides under that handle. Poke the metal key in there and turn it to unlock the door.

If you can't start the car the regular way, remove the plastic dummy key from the ignition, then poke your keyless key in there and turn it the usual way.

Get one!, and by all means get one with luxury leather and convenience options and the more than powerful enough base 4-zylinder turbo engine as I did.

Hint: While mine came with Continental ContiSportContact 5P summer sports tires, I replaced them with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 all-season tires, which last twice as long and won't slip around if I get caught in snow, mud or freezing temperatures. The great news is that the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 all-season tires feel and drive exactly the same on dry roads.

Hint: If you want more USB-C charging power or more outlets, I use the mighty Anker 535 charger plugged into the 12V outlet, which I measure really does put out at least 60W, and is rated for 67W from its various outputs. It has two USB-C and one USB-A port so all my guests are covered on road trips.

For a basic and powerful charger with more than enough power to charge iPhones and iPad Pros at their fastest rates, even the less expensive Anker 323 charger popped into a 12V outlet is rated for 30W over USB-C (20V at 1.5A) and actually puts out about 32W USB-C.

Hint: Join the PCA, the Porsche Club of America. Even if you don't enjoy the great national magazine, local chapter news and track and other club events, we get discounts on parts and service at our dealer which more than pays for the annual membership.
